Show LIFE BEYOND THE GRAVE Special rouBic was furnished at the First Presbyterian church Sunday evening by Mrs. C. H. Stevens and tho Misses Louise Plorce and Bcutrlce f Ilarail, uftcr which tho Rev. J. fi. Carver Car-ver delivered the second or a series of sermons, his. subject being "Conditions "Con-ditions of Life Beyond the Grave." Rov Carvor said In purl. "We haVe beon solemnly remluded this week of tho renllty of what tho world calls an untimoly death. The Lord came In the night ahd upon th.- sea and death claimed Its own. It was not tho number of lout that ap-rvilleri ap-rvilleri us as much as tho tragic man-nor man-nor of the call. Wo read that already ulmoot as large u number have been drowned in the "nod of the 'Fathor of Waters,' but they wont ono by one. Accident and insufficient food aud air claim directly or indirectly great num-' bors each year of the toiling and the poor. Famine In China is now carrying carry-ing away many times the number lost at sea. But when In tho dark and deep a human cargo goes down with no hand to help, our hearts arc touched. We know not how soon or in what manner any of us shall go Some of us may meet an untimely end. Wo do know that we must face death and meet it. Sir Walter Scott's laBt entry In his Journal was; 'We i Blept reasonably well, but In the morning ' Death left that son- tenco unfinished. Only tho great writer knew what the morrow brought. It Is not enough to know that wo continue after death. We want to know how and where. If in tho few short years hero the child wearies of his toys, the man of his business, the aged of pleasure and fame, the sensualist of his gross ?at. timo. and If the worst fate possible would bo, like the Flying Dutchman or Wandering Jew, to wander endlessly end-lessly up and down tho earth, what can be tho conditions aud environment that will give pleasures evcrmoro' Many havo been the attempts to picture pic-ture them, but only thoso wondrous delineations In the holy writ have held and charmed, the desires or soothed tho cares and sorrows of men. Wo have rend of the Egyptian Ostfls, the Grecian Olympia, Iho Roman, Elysium, tho Norseman's' Valhalla, tho Mohammedan's' Mo-hammedan's' Harem anl Brahma's Vlhvna, but neither thoso nor Milton or Dante give us gront and constant longing. The simple words of the New Testament, however, have drawn tho world with wondrous power and moro and more tho world reads them. IvOt no ono toll you that our Bible has no word of tho life beyond. It has many, and they arc for your strength and comfort, as well as warning and solemn guidance. Heaven has suffered suf-fered by the foolish delineations of thoso who picture reposing on clouda or )salm-8lnging or waving palm branches, of gold and jeweled glass-paved glass-paved streets, or Idle ease by ever-llowlng ever-llowlng rivers as the endless occupation occupa-tion through countless ages. God mado us for bettor things here, and he has better work and deeper joy aud more lasting peace than that for us there. Restlessness, sameness and Idleness aro not tho Joys of heaven. I Inow call you to consldor the heavenly heaven-ly lifo as the BIblo tells it. "Tho joy of heaven means the In-" ward Joy; the joy of character and of goodness; the joy of knowledge and service, faith, hopo aud love developed to the full Tho Joy of continued progress in all that is pure, true and best. Tennyson well said that death's' true name was 'Onward,' meaning that it was only continued and continuing development. Paul in his letter to the Corinthians boldly proclaims it. Our nature answers to it here Wo begin our heaven here and now, not by taking tak-ing a Journoy to the sky, but by Journeying Jour-neying from a bad stato of life to a good stato, from a state of mind and conduct at enmity to God to a state of loval, active obedience to Christ The Christ said that he that liveth and bcllovcth In me hath everlasting Ilfo 'The bogiunlng of heaven says ono 'Is not tho hour of death, but at the hour when we draw near to God aud with new standards of conduct con-duct and trust rcalizo tho beauty of holiness and the horror of sin. Tho hour when self-will Is crucified and tho God-will is born in tho resolutions of a licw heart.' Thoso who will cn-jov cn-jov the utjaven of the hereufter arc those who commence heaven hero and now Thoy who may hope to do tho will of God'"thW aro those who aro trying to do his will now on earth Those who have true faith in Christ are thoso who arc showing that faith in life and deed. There aro many plain Btatcments about heaven and the conditions of lifo after death. i |
