Tho story that Edward Illnes. the lumberman, lum-berman, helped "put over" tho election elec-tion of Senator Isaac Stephenson and that Hines omployed Robert J. ShloldB to work on the case, both at Washington Wash-ington and at Madison, Wis., was repeated re-peated before tho senatorial investigating inves-tigating committee today. Wirt H. Cook, a lumberman of Du-luth. Du-luth. declared ho had secured Information Infor-mation from Daniel Haley, -anotlior! lumberman of Duluth. that Shields had had a falling out with Hines because be-cause Shields wanted $15,000 for the work and HIneB refused to pay that! much, saying Stephenson ought to pay half of It. Regarding a conversation In Chicago Chi-cago with Lieutenant Governor Morris Mor-ris and others, Cook testified: "What I did Bn- was that Edward Hines raised about $100,000 or $115,-1 000 to 'put over' the election. Tho statement was based on what I had heard about Shields" , Cook then related a conversation which he said occurred between Hines and Henry Turrish In a hotol lobby in Chicago in May, 1909. "Turrish asked Hinos how he was getting on 'Having a hard time,' replied re-plied Hines. 'For instance, there is Stephenson. After I elected him ho goes down to Washington and votes for free lumber.'
