"I was present In the room and heard the conversation conversa-tion oyer the telephone between Edward Ed-ward Hines and a man he called "Governor," "Gov-ernor," but 1 don't remember what the conversation was." This statement was made here today to-day by William O'Brien, president of the Putnman Lumber company, whoso name was mentioned at the Lorimer Inquiry at Springfield, 111., yesterday as having overheard a telephone conversation con-versation between Edwards and some ono called "Governor," at a Chicago hotel. "Later on, when they wero stirring up the Lorimer case," said Mr. O'Brien, "Mr. Wiche camo to Mv. Cook and myself and asked us to keep out of the way of the piocess servers as an effort might be made to subpoena sub-poena us as witnesses. We were not subpoenaed, but made no special effort ef-fort to evade the suhpoenaes. We went about In Chicago aa usual. "They can't subpoena me now, as I am In Minnesota, but they sent a man here a short time ago and wanted me to make an affidavit as to what I heard "I told him that I remembered nothing noth-ing of the conversation and could be of no value to the committee as witness. wit-ness.
