Show i mm o HOOLJEVISiON WASHINGTON, July 25 -After more than threo hours in caucus, tho : Democratic senators tonight got no 1 nearer a. decision as to their party action ac-tion on the house wool tariff revision bill, now in the senate. As a result the caucus will bo resumed tomorrow 'night. It has developed that the senate Democrats are practically unanimous in support of the house measure The difference in opinion exists on a question of Democratic attitude toward to-ward the LaFollette bill, In case it is offered as a substitute after the houso wool measure is defeated. Several senators expressed their .desire to vote for the LaFollette substitute sub-stitute after the house measure was voted down, supposing this is done, but a majority frowned upon this program, pro-gram, holding that, as Democrats, tho 'minority should stand or fall with tho house bill. Senator Martin bi ought the mattor hquaro before the caucus- by offering a resolution pledging the bonntc minority's mi-nority's support to the houso bill and to do nother No action upon this resolution was taken. Probably tho most btartling -development of the day was the dlscovory in the earl afternoon that there was Ri possibility of the- passage of "tho houso wodl bill "throogli l1e 'aid of insurgent in-surgent ' Republican Votes; This' rc- port became current through expressions expres-sions of Scnatoro Polndcvxter 'ofj Washington, an insurgent wh6' Is friendly to tho house bill. There was an Immediate canvass of tho situation and it was found that some of those mentioned as favorablo to the house bill had been placed In a false position. Threo or four insurgents insur-gents wero found to have said they would accept the house bill if no other measure could bo passed, but so far as could be determined the number was no sufficient to secure favorable action and the leaders of the regular Republicans regained their equnnan-mltty equnnan-mltty and were predicting there would be no tariff legislation In the present session. The fact thai at least a few Insurgents may vote for the house bill has stirred the Democrats to make a genoral counting of noses. They have only 40 Democratic votes, rendering ren-dering it necessary io get six moro in order to affect legislation They have therefore telegraphed Senator Hoko Smith of Georgia urging him to come immediately to Washington to qualify in order to be in a position to voLo' Thursday. Not a voice has been raised in debate de-bate over the wool hill In tho senate chamber, though the house bill has been the "unfinished business" slnco yesterday, nnd the vote on wool is to-come to-come Thursday, -when tho debate' ends on that day oo |
