Show RAILROADS REDUCING EXPENSES Beginning today, the employes of the Sou thorn Pacific shops will work but eight hours per day with the probability of the week being cut lo five days Officials state that tho reduction In hours Is due to the lack of business nnd hos no connection with tho threatening labor trouble During the early summer the eight-hour eight-hour sstem prevailed nnd the shops wero closed on Saturday, the men working but forty hours per week. A slight Increase In the amount of traffic traf-fic caused tho rallroud to Increase the hours of work to nine and the week was lengthened to six days. While tho eight-hour day will continue con-tinue Indefinitely, there Is a prob ability that the closing of tho shop on Saturday will bo of short duration. dura-tion. Tho force at the Harrlman frolght depot was cut down today, men on the platform work and clorks In the agent's office being suspended. The retrenchment is oxtondlng to all branches of tho railroad service. While it is rumored that the retrenchment re-trenchment of the company at this time Is done to discourage strike agitation, officials state that It has nothing to do with tho ponding tiouble and Is being done meroly be-causo be-causo of the shortage of traffic. The rumor that tho retrenchment Is due to the strike trouble Is probablv based on the fact that a similar shortening shorten-ing of hours has taken place at Cheyenne Chey-enne and at other places which might prove strike confers should a strike be called |
