Show ELKS LODGE BUYS CENTRAL SCHOOL Purchase Price is $25,000 and $10,000 or More Is to be Expended in Making the Old School Building a Beautiful Home for the Antlered Herd New School to Be Built. The committee on building of the local order of Elks has purchased of tho city board of education tho Central Cen-tral school building on Grant avenue, Immediately south of Twenty-frith, streot, paying for it the sum of $25,-000 $25,-000 the deal having boon closed today. The personnel of the committee Is T. W. Jones, George Glonn, C. A. Boyd and James A. Howell. It Is the Intention of tho lodge to expend from 10,000 to $12,000 in remodeling re-modeling the building so as to make a handsome home for tho Elks. It Is stated, that the board of education edu-cation will use the monoy received for tho building in erecting a school house In tho First ward. It Is likely that plans for the new school house will bo drawn at an early date. The ElkB' new home Is a two-tory building containing a basement and an attic, being GO foot square. The basement will be used as a gynaslum, grill room and for social and athletic sports. The first floor will bo utilized as a reception room and will contain the library and reading rooms. Tho second or upper, floor will be used exclusively for lodge purposes. On this floor are numerous class rooms whose partitions will be removed re-moved and the entire floor will bo turned Into a large lodge room. Thoro will not be many changes made on the first floor, It now being partitioned in about the manner desired by tho committee for the purposes to which It will be put. The ground purchased by tho committee com-mittee and upon which tho building stands, has a frontago of 132 feet on Grant avenue and extends into tho block, westward, a distance of 330 feet. Tho ground In front of the building build-ing Is covered by a beautiful lawn. The ground to the rear of tho building build-ing will be turnod into a play ground where a tennis court will be established, estab-lished, a hand-ball place made, and a cinder track established. Members of the building committee state that tho structure will be mado Into a model club house, one of which the Elks of all lodges may well feel proud. No time will be lost in perfecting per-fecting the plans. It is stated that the now home will be ready for occupancy by the early fall. The money for tho remodeling is , forthcoming and, bo far as can bo determined, there will bo nothing In tho way of progress. The Elks' lodge hero was organized only about six years ago but It has an active membership of about 350 It always has been in a good condltjon, financially, fraternally and socially. Much rejoicing prevails among the Elks because of the purchase of tho homo and overy effort will be put forth by the members, Individually and collectively, to make it among the most handsome and comfortable fra-tornal fra-tornal homes of the state. |
