Edward ' Cann of Chicago, former inspector of I police who was pardoned yesterday I by Governor Deneen, today left the' H Illinois State prison where he was I serving sentence following convlc-H convlc-H tlon of accepting bribes from owners and keepers of disorderly places. He H took tho first train for Chicago. II Ho had no knowledge of the coming I pardon when he was sent out to his regular work on the prison farm this inornlng. When the papers hadar- rived, ho was called into the warden's II office, where friends were awaiting II I him. Realizing from their smiling II j faces that he had been pardoned ho II .embraced his cousin, Mrs. Jennie Gll- lespie, and shook hands warmly sith Iall present. He was then taken to tho office of the recording clerk, and was given his personal property, taken from him when ha entered the jail. In addition ho was presented with the customary B j$10 given to all discharged or paroled H vprisoners. When this was explaln- ted to him, he smiled saying "Well, It will go well toward getting a new bonnet for Mrs. McCann." McCann is stouter than when bo entered the prison, nnd says ho is in 'better health. - |
