Show DEFENSE RESTS IN SCOENK. CASE Wheeling W. Ya., Jan. 21. It was stated by the "defense at noon today, In the Schenk trial, that it would probably rest its case at 5 o'clock and that it would not resort to the Insanity Insan-ity plea. When questioned concerning the alleged al-leged assertion of Prosecutor Handlan that Mrs. Schenk had made a confession con-fession to him, Attorney O'Brien -denied it, saying she always maintained her innocence. "From what you learned," asked J. P. O'Brien, "plus what Dr. Siipp told you, did not you come to tho conclusion con-clusion that he was suffering from gastric troubles and not arsenical poisoning?" pois-oning?" "No, I could not say that . Ho had evidently some symptoms of arsenical arseni-cal poisoning." On cross-examination, ho said Schenk was undoubtedly a big healthy man' before his alleged poisoning and had lost much weight since. He admitted ad-mitted that all symptoms which he found Indicated that Schenk was suffering suf-fering from clnonlc lead poisoning and also arsenical poisoning. Mrs. Jane Hedges on direct examination examin-ation said: "Albert Schenk told me that John Schenk had bought his wife a $6,000 automobile and that he said: " 'I hope she breaks her neck the first lime she goes out in it. I will leave no stone unturned to get rid of the woman and ariother of the family fam-ily ' " On cross-examinationr Mr. Handlan sought to establish the fact that the witness was an enemy of Albert Schenk who headed a syndicate for the purchase of a largo tract of land and that suit had been brought a'yainst her. At the afternoon session, Mrs. Jano Hedges was recalled for further cross-examination. cross-examination.
