Show DEADLOCK IN THE UTAH LEGISLATURE it . 77T May Prolong the Session Several Days and Cause Endless Confusion- Cigarette Bill Started the Uproar Gambling Felony Bill Passes the Senate With Only One Dissenting Vote The much condemned cigarette has another crime to answer for inasmuch as, at this morning's session of tho slate legislature, It caused a deadlock between the two houses which Is still holding forth and which threatens to continue the present session for several sev-eral days longer or to cause a sine die adjournment with several Important bills still on the calendar Senator Kuchler, during tho morning morn-ing session, asked that the senate appoint ap-point two members of that body to act In conjunction with two members of the house as a conference sifting committee. com-mittee. This committee was formed after the house had concurred in tho matter. Senators Kuchler and Badger were appointed on this committee and went into conference with the members appointed ap-pointed by the house. loiter the committee appeared and the two senate members reported in the senate chamber During the absence ab-sence of the committee members, the anti-cigarette bill was taken up by the senate just as Badger was about to report on the work of the committee. Senator Smith jumped to his feet and asked if the committee had favored the Introduction of tne cigarette bill and when he learned that this measure was not on the committee's list he objected to any action being' taken upon up-on it. Half a dozen senators were on their feet at once and a mimic battle of war ensued, which was finally settled by the matter being put to a vote. As two-thirds of the senators voted that tho bill should be actod upon, tha measure Itself was put to a vote and passed. The members of the sifting committee from the house learned what action had been taken by the 6enate and refused to make their report to the house because be-cause of the senate's refusal to abide by the action of tho committee. The deadlock was on. for other members of the house joined with the commlt-teo commlt-teo members in their protest and It was decided by the house that no bills would be received from the senate body until the action on the antl-clg-arette bill be rescinded. Up to a late hour this afternoon tho senate was still holding Its ground, and several of the senators state that they will not drop the cigarette bill, , and, until such concession Is made, members of the house say they will not act on any of the measures which the sonate may submit. The most Important bill to pass the senate today was the anti-gambling measure, which makes all persons connected In any manner with the running of a game of chance felons and punishable under tho state laws governing felony. This Is house bill .No. 2G3 and has already passed through the hands of the representatives. representa-tives. The measure met with but little opposition op-position in the senate, the only member mem-ber to speak against It being Senator Bonner X. Smith, who stated that the bill should not Include the men employed em-ployed In gambling houses as dealers. Only one vote was registered against the measure.
