Show Soldier Returns From Jap Prison "Life in a Jap prison camp is pretty rugged." Corporal Eugene Nielsen, 28, of Logan, who is spending a furlough here, declared today after escaping from a Japanese Jap-anese prison camp in the southwest south-west Philippines. A prisoner since May 6, 1942 he admits that only by eluding the enemy was he able to endure the handling they put out. He was shot through the thigh by an enemy soldier during his escape, but managed to hide, while searching patrols searched the area, finally swimming several miles across a bay to join the Filipino guerillas. He worked about 12 hours a day on a Jap airfield without shoes, until a Red Cross shjp came in and he got a pair of GI shoes. There were scarcely any clothes, and he wore but one pair of shorts since his capture. Malaria, dysentery, diarrhea and malnutrition were deadly enemies, ene-mies, at first. Rice and greens proved to be unbalanced fare for average men, Corporal Nielsen said. The atrocities, including beating, shooting, starving and tying naked men in the hot tropical sun, were a few of the scenes already reported re-ported by correspondents, that Corporal Nielsen witnessed. Before coming to Logan, Corporal Cor-poral Nielsen was flown to Washington, D. C. from the west coast where he was interviewed by high army officials, including General George C. Marshall, chief of staff. He was awarded the bronze star for his escape from the camp and subsequent activities with Filipino guerillas and for securing 'valuable information concerning con-cerning the enemy in that area. He enlisted in the coast artillery in February, 1941 and went straight to Corregidor where he was taken prisoner when General Mainwright surrendered the rock. Following a 90-day furlough, he will report to Bushnell general hospital for another physical check-up, and re-assignment.
