Show Winner Z- WELLS IH. ALLRED Sears Scholarship Goes to Emery County Student Wells fti. AMred of Emery, a sophomore student at USAC last year, has been chosen to receive a $250 scholarship in the fourth National Na-tional Sears Scholarship contest, according to word received by college officials. Mr. Allied was chosen from a field of 36 candidates, representing represent-ing state colleges and universities throughout the nation. First place in the contest and winner of the 5500 scholarship was Robert J. Spitze, a 19 year old sophomore at the University of Arkansas. In past years, the letter to President Peterson explained a judging committee of college deans interviewed the candidates and made final selections from their findings after the student had been rated from briefs. This year, however, how-ever, the brief was the sole basis of judging. In the balloting eight states voted vot-ed to give first place to Mr. Allred. Another seven voted him second, while two gave him third. The students were rated according to four qualities, being judged 50 per cent on scholarship, 25 per cent on leadership, 15 per cent on personality per-sonality and 10 per cent on business busi-ness ability. During his freshman year at Utah State, he was awarded the state leadership medal in agriculture agricul-ture by the state farm bureau federation fed-eration for the outstanding Future Farmer activities during his high school years, and served as president presi-dent of the state organization. |
