Show Diary Tells of Early Life in Cache Valley By Hugh F. O'Neil An insight into early life in Cache Valley is to be found in the diaries of J. Z. Stewart, early Logan school teacher, which are now in the possession of Dr. I. P. Stewart. Stewart began teaching school in Logan on January 6, 1873. An entry for February 13, 1873 reads: "Taught school. Received $7.70 worth of books, etc. from Bro-Sorenson. Bro-Sorenson. Big snow all day." For the three month school term of 1873, Stewart was paid $75 per month. During 1875 this salary was Increased to $116 per month. During September 1875, Stewart Stew-art was called on a mission to Mexico in company with R. H. Smith, D. W. Jones, Wiley Jones, Helaman Pratt, Anthony Ivins. rnd Ammon M. Tenney. The company com-pany had with them, on their departure, de-parture, 18 pack animals and 3 nonths provisions. Stewart continued on his mission mis-sion until 1S77 traveling through Mexico, Arizona, Texas and New Mexico. |
