Show War Effort Needs Stenographers For Government Work Tile U. S. Civil Service Commission Commis-sion is greatly concerned because of the refusal of young women to accept jobs as stenographers and typists in Washington, D. C, as the lack of a sufficient number of women to fill these positions is definitely handicapping our war effort. ef-fort. Women stenographers and typists are urgently needed to fill positions in various government departments de-partments in Washington D. C. It is the responsibility of the young women of America to do their part to bring about a speedy victory and tills can only be accomplished if everyone is willing to serve in the position where she is most urgently needed and for which she is best qualified. The problem of transportation to Washington, D. C, and the erroneous er-roneous reports of the high cost . of living may be the reasons many young women have not applied for these positions. Several agencies have been established in the Capi- tol to assist newcomers in making mak-ing living arrangements and a recent re-cent survey shows that the cost of living in Washington, D. C, is very little, if any, higher than In such other cities as San Francisco and New York. Requirements have been cut to a minimum and today immediate appointment will be given to women, wom-en, who are able to pass an ex-aination. ex-aination. Women must be 18 years of age or over to qualify. Typists should be able to copy simple printed material accurately and at moderate speed, and stenographers to take dictation at the rate of 96 words per minute. Both the sten ographers and typists are required to pass a general test designed to measure the ability to understand and follow simple written directions, direc-tions, knowledge of word usage, and general skill in the use of the English language. The salary is $120.00 per month and opportunities opportuni-ties for advancement are unlimited. Women who are qualified and who want to do their part for national na-tional defense should immediately contact the Thirteenth U. S.
