Show Barley Studies Made at College Results of an eight-year study of the new barley variety, Velvon. which has been shown to be highly resistant to covered smut, while Trebi and Winter Club, the common varieties grown in Utah, are among the most susceptible, were revealed Tuesday in the July edition of the Journal of the American Am-erican Society of Agronomy. Investigations over the eight years included over 40 varieties of barley which were inoculated with j smut to study their reactions to this disease. The long-term obser- vations were made by R. W. Woodward Wood-ward of the U. S. Bureau of Plant Industry stationed at Logan, and D. C. Tingey of the Utah Agricultural Agricul-tural Experiment station. The study showed that barley grown on a soil of moderately low productivity had a higher smut infection than that on fertile soil-Depth soil-Depth of seeding, date of seeding and weeding of seed also showed little consistant influence on infection. |
