Three Hazards Cause Most Fires Carelessness with matches and smoking; dirty and defective heating plants, including the chimney; and flammable wood shingle roofs, are the major causes caus-es of home fires, according to the National Fire Protection association, associa-tion, sponsors of Fire Prevention Week,' October 7-13. 'Fire Chief Laurence urges home owners not to smoke in bed; to keep matches in metal containers and out of the reach of small children; to repair and regularly clean heating plants and chimneys; and to use some fire-resistant roofing materal, such as asphalt shingles, slate, tile or asbestos.
