A' native of Richmond, Chief Laurence joined the department October 1, 1929 as a third class fireman after graduating from North Cache high school. He has served in practically every position in the fire department depart-ment including work as shop mechanic, truck driver, hydrant man, and first aid specialist and instructor. He was appointed m 1939 as fire marshall and electrical wiring inspector, a position he held for three years. He has been secretary of the firemen's association. associa-tion. He has been a captain since June 22, 1941. Mayor Evans pointed out that the new chief has had the longest service of any captain in the department de-partment and said he is expected to obtain full cooperation from members of the department and the public. Fire Chief Appointed E. S. Laurence Succeeds C. W. Rapp Elmer S. Laurence, 36, member of the Logan-Cache fire department depart-ment since 1929 and a captain in the organization for the past two years, was appointed by the Logan Lo-gan city commission in a special meeting Thursday as acting chief f the department, succeeding C W. Rapp. The recommendation of Mayor William Evans Jr., that Captain Laurence be made acting chief was approved unanimously by the city commission. The appointment was scheduled to be made at a regular commission meeting Tuesday Tues-day night, but absence of one of the commissioners on a deer hunt Tuesdsay prompted Thursday morning's special session. Commissioners made no explanation explana-tion of the title "acting chief" Dut it was presumed that the Position would be permanent after Chief Laurence has had an opportunity op-portunity to demonstrate his qualifications. The new chief said he appreciated appre-ciated the confidence shown in fj'm by the commission and said he hoped to carry on the outstanding outstand-ing traditions of the departments. "With the support of such fine firemen as are in the department and of the city and county commissioners com-missioners and the public, I dh't see how I could fail," he added.
