On his return from abroad Hitchcock Hitch-cock said: "Current opinion in England, Eng-land, among both American and British fliers, is that the P-51 wilh the Merlin engine will be the best fighter plane in the world in 1943." While in England Maj. Hitchcock served as assistant military attache for air.
