Show i - : ' PAGE SEVENS . THE blNGHAM PRESS BULLETIN . In Whaling Day$ Whaling hi carried on by the Nor-wegians early as 900 A. D. Whal-ing was at Us height about 1840. Reorganization (Continued from Tage 1) These courses are important but they do not embrace all that is important for girls to learn about home making. Such courses as the following miKht well be niven more emphasis: I. Personal hygiene and sanitation. II. Motherhood, wifehood and the ideals of home life. III. Home nursing. IV. Child Life lliolopically, Phy-siologically, Psychologically. These brief statements of suRRestcd additions to the course of study for both boys and girls while they do not even approximately cover the field will nevertheless, we hope, help the patrons of the school to nit an idea of what the school people are thinking alonR these lines. These problems are presented to the citizens of Kingham for the follow-ing reasons: I. The school hi'lors to the com-munity and the citizens of the com-munity have a perfect rinht to know the plans of the school people for the school. II. If these plans are in the wrong direction wc want them to be checked before it is too late. It will cost too much in money, time, and energy to permit them to go forward unless they arc really worth while. If the citizens of the community are famil-iar with plans they will be in a posi-tion to help check them if they are not worthy. III. Then too, if this program is to be put over in a big way it willj reuuire the cooperation of the entire community. Considerable money will he required for equipment. It will finally require one and perhaps two additional teachers. This additional expense will, however, not be consid-ered as an obstacle if the community comes to feel that the plan will ac-tually provide substantial increased advantages for the-boy- s and girls of the community. IV. A great deal of what has been suggested as additions to the course of study cannot be found in text books. In a large degree these courses must be worked out from the actual experiences of men and wo-men working in the practical fields of life. Already the superintendents and engineers of the mines have offered many helpful suggestions. The co-operation of these men wc consider to be absolutely essential in the form-ulation of the courses we have sug-gested for boys. What these men are eloing to help build the courses for boys the women of the commun-ity are in a position to do in build-ing the courses for girls. Bird Hunte Snaket The fanciful resemblance of the long feather of his crest to a quill pen thrust behind the ear suggested the name "Secretary" bird. This bird's habits, says Nature Mimsilne, are fur from literary, as Its buHlness In life Is hunting snakes and similar animals. H Is an African, and Is one of the largest birds of prey. Birmingham Age-Heral- IIS FAIL IN CUP EFFORT Bingham Soccer Team Proves For-m- er Victory No Fluke by Decisive 3 to 0 Win. Locals in Finals. The Utah Copper soccer team proved its superiority at the English game at Utah Copper ball park Sat-urday afternoon, when it won handily from the Vikings in the semi-fina- ls of the Daynes Cup series, 3 to 0. The victory, after playing these Norsemen to a tie the previous week, not only gave the locals the right to play Salt Lake for the cup, but also added another victory to the regular league games, as it was decided be-fore the contest that the game would be counted as a league game also on account of the lateness of the season. This double victory gives the Utah Copper lads a clean slate for the sea-son, with all games won, and only one tied. Ilinglmm has proved its superiority thus far this season, and only a mrr-acl- c can keep them from winning not only the Daynes Cup, but also the state championship. Hut getting back to the game of last Saturday. The teams lined up as se-lected, and everyone was on his toes when referee Whitting' started the contest with a blast from his whistle. For the first five minutes both teams battled on an equal footing. with neither one showing to advan-tage. Denver cleared to Carr, who shot to Duffy. This clever lad made a good run, followed by Carr, and when Duffy drew Moe out of goal, Carr got possession within three yards of the coveted spot, and with Moe visiting with Duffy, it was easy, no one being near Carr, and Ding-ha- m had registered the first .core of the game. Peeved at such foolishness, the Vik-ings pressed, and only a perfect save by Wharton kept them from tying the score. McKnight and Andrcason were prominent. Bingham pressed ,and Duffy shot a neat center, but the locals failed to put the shot through. The Viking backs were playing a strong game. The Vikings pressed, and another wonderful save by Wharton sent the ball out of danger. Bingham pressed again, and Moe made a wonderful save from Bryan. The visitors pressed and again Whar-ton did his stuff. The game was ex-ceptionally fast up to this time witjj Bingham showing to a slight advan-tage. Whitton cleared with a beautiful kick, getting the pellet out of danger. On a corner kick M. Gaythwaitc made a good center, but the Vikings were strong, and again the locals lost a chance to add to their laurels. Denver was penalized for hands in the penalty area, and Wharton made, a clever save from McKnight. W har-to- n received a big hand from crowd for his clever work. The enemy pressed, and two brilliant saves by Wharton kept the visitors from scoring. McKnight was penalized for hands in the penalty area, and Bryan sent a low shot past Moe for the second local score. Bingham was in pos-session and pressing hard at the end of the first half. Upon resumption of play, the Vik-ings pressed and Wharton was again asked to make a dandy save. Duffy made a good run, and then Ted Gay-thwai-made a fine clearance, the Vikings pressed, and Mannion clear-ed. Bingham pressed and threatened the enemy goal. Olaf Olson made a wonderful save with his head, when E. T, Gaythwaite sent a hot shot past Moe. A few minutes later Carr kick-ed past Moe, and Andrcason cleared. E. T. Gaythwaitc, on a comer kick, made a beautiful center and during the melee that followed Carr sent a low shot through the coveted spot making the third point for the home team. Both teams played a trifle too rough to suit his majesty, the referee, and time was taken out while his nibs warned both sides. The last fifteen minutes of pfay saw the ball at both ends of the field, although the clever saving of Whar-ton, made it impossible for the en-emy to ring the bell. The lineup: Bingham 3 Pos. Many 'jj people become so accustomed to "tourists," that they are inclined to remain n indifferent as to the strangers' welfare. From a community standpoint this ,! is a great mistake, to say nothing of the humanitarian side. J It is the man who comes into your town and then leaves that tells the outside world what kind of a town you have. He is the man who either will " come later and bring his family to reside in your town, or induce others to come, provided the town and its people impress him favorably. He also is the fellow who will give your town a black eye if he receives the slightest mistreatment or if the places does not appeal to him. Memories, either for good or bad, linger with him ,and he is not averse to telling the world all about it. Don't overcharge tourists. This is the "sticker" with them. They will ' remember an overcharge long after you have spent the money it represents. A penny gained in overcharging is a dollar lost to your community's future. The bible says something about not turning the stranger from your door lest you may turn away an angel unawares. So it is with the tourist. Remember, he has the energy, the ambition and the money to come on a long trip, and the courtesy to make your town one of his objective points. """Local business Vncn, and city and town officials should always be on the alert to extend every possible courtesy to the tourist and traveler. 1 There is hardly a man or CRITICISM woman in public life in Bingham Canyon who does not receive crlicism. Sometimes this criticism is constructive, sometimes it is destructive. Our public officials from time to time and from hand. Every president or chairman of a club year to year get it on every or society, every officer and leader in church work, every man or woman engaged in administering the affairs of our schools, the local press-- all of them some time or other, get criticized. Sometimes the criticism takes on the aspect of abuse or even of slander. I More often it is merely cutting or sarcastic. .. " Why is this? The answer follows that it is because these officers and administrators are human, and because they live in a human world and a human community. of leadership. He who rules He who leads must expect the hardships rebellion. He who initiates must must expect occasional passive or open expect reaction and opposition from those whose lfe s philosophy leads 'them into contrary channels of thought. ' The situation in Bingham Canyon is perhaps no worse than that ,n any . other community. Constructive criticism is needful to growth; but the great-er but charitable, in dealing it out. need is that people be not unkind, LEAGUE SEASON OPENS SUNDRY Local Fans Thirst for Taste of Real Baseball Vhen Copper and Apex Meet in Opening Tilt. .Sunday is the Big Day, the date set aside by the Copper League of-ficials for the opening of the league season, the first home game to be a nine inning tilt between the Utah Copper and the Utah Apex teams. These two teams should give the local fans one of the best games of the year, as both will fight hard to get the advantage at the very outset, and with both nines having a large following, one of the largest crowds that ever attended a ball game should be in attendance. Manager Sorcnson of the Copper team is grooming his hurling ace, Jerry Dunn, for the opening fray, with "Red" Muir doing the catching. Dunn has appeared in but one game this year, but showed he still is the clever chucker of old, and no doubt the underground men will have plenty of trouble getting to him. Lolo Spencer, skipper of the Apex team at the time of going to press was undecided as to whom he would use in the box, although it looks as though he will start "Skinny" Miller. Miller, like Dunn, has appeared in but one game this year, but during the five innings he worked he allowed Mid vale but one scratch hit. "Boob" Burrows is also ready for slab duty, according to the skipper, and may be pressed into service at the eleventh hour. The game will start at 4:30, and stages will run to and from the park at short intervals. Of course, there is no need telling the fans that the game will be played at Utah Copper ball park. DON'T FORGET TO GET THE SEASON'S SCHEDULE AS YOU ENTER THE PARK. Not to Be Evaded No man of woman born, coward or brare, csn shun his destiny. Bryant. |
