we bad had no until the ar rival aal yal of the excursion from mohrland Mob rland which brought the bind and und several undred hundred people at 10 t but we boand and some way of amusing our tires selves in the Ince interim rim the first big event was the parade chich started shortly aft erthe arival arrival of the band and it was some parade arade more than a mile of beauty nd enterprise showing plainly that when hen price business men really make up p their minds to do something they do it well mayor carlo gunderson Gund ereon handled the be big I 1 like a veteran field marshal and there was no hitch bitch or accident to mar the triumphal pross ion through the streets the business houses of the city had ad been gaily decorated for the vent event and the city administration hd id done its part by having flags bunting and colored lights hung cross across the principal streets the committees bad had looked after the comfort of visitors by providing rest with rocking chairs xau couches chez rash basins towels lavatories and all 11 other necessities for rest and und comfort ort all these places were welt well patronized and appreciated atje new dri drinking aking fountains were liberally patronized as were the soda fountains and eating places of the ity city while nobody made any big joney it is safe to sav hat that nobody lost by reason of the celebration ve we had a good go d time and paid hornce to the pioneers of 1847 and those we vere the reasons for the celebration just before the parade started the members of the executive went ent to the savoy hotel and picked p fam the hotel register the names of ahree men to act as its judges these aen en were preston Pres toti Lit liford iford and theo aspe of salt lakoe and 0 1 curtis I 1 u colo and they stood in aront of the hotel and viewed the ds 4 t us q it passed after considerable and deliberation bey hey gave first prize to nephi gun lerson erson wife and children who trav with a push cart of the pattern brought rought into utah by the pioneers of 1847 the deml membra rs of the family ere arrayed after the fashion odthe of the ate te they represented even to the wooden shoes worn wora by some of the lucent r second d prize went to the eastern ia tab Wool growers association pis float was composed of a sheep en n containing sheep a spi spinning lining fruct het 1 and other accessories for con 1119 4 the wool into clothing the e style shop captured third ith h 1 ni monster onster hat of beautiful bea t dutiful dein doin worked into the design wele iles es the size of a human head and be faces of five girls out of the trimming around he e holed holes this was one of the most dutiful ticul auti ful floats in the parade the smoot lumber com iny was awarded fourth prize on i 10 it containing products of th the ay w ast mill and articles from the lumber yard and hardware stock there were so many beautiful I 1 floats that the members of the committee had a difficult task in select ing the winners and one member in formed the writer that had the pa rade not been in honor of the pioneers first prize might have gone to another float the formation of the parade was as band the indian attack on tho the pioneers was exciting and spectacular and one of the warriors got too close to his red brothers a and nd was shot in the hip with a charge of bowd powder e r an and d wad causing a painful wound immediately Immediato lY after the parade the children were given a chanco chance to earn a little spending money at races of various kinds tho the men inen and women indulged ina in a needle t threading breading contest and several women showed their aptitude at driving nails the f fat at mens race was won by co C N russell with john bryner second orson larson third and newt williams fourth after these sports which were held in front of the bowery everybody went wont to dinner the program at tho the main street and it is to bowery was a 2 good one be regretted that tho the rain camo came in time to spoil a part of it shortly after I 1 p m the mohrland band opened the program with a selection and this was followed by the invocation of the divine divina blessing by bishop albert bryner miss jean mcgee delighted the aud audience lonce with a piano solo after which miss agnes mclean read an original composition on early day pioneering then another selection by the mohrland band followed by 0 S price frice who paid eloquent tribute to the pioneers who settled utah and wrested it from the cactus coyotes and other obstacles the young ladles ladies representing the various counties of utah then sang a song and this was followed by rev P A simpkin of salt lake who is ao no stranger to eastern utahna mr simpkin was in good form and his long residence in utah has ff sted him to talk of pioneer days and his talk was both forceful and eloquent and he was frequently inter apted by cheers and applause before he had bad closed the rain began to fall and the program was brought to a close by the audience singing america with several numbers cancelled and it sure did rain min for a half hour cooling the atmosphere mo sphere and putting the roads in excellent condition for the remainder of the da day As soon as the rain ceased the crowd repaired to the ha paik where the price fats and helper leans went at it like wildcats for two fast rounds ending up with the fats winning 11 to 1 this evened up the drubbing the leans gave the fats at helper july ath it had been arranged that dat ump lindsay was to pave the way for breaking up the game by making a rank decision at the close of the second inning and he kept his appointment so well that when the hi members embers of both teams started a sham battle a few of the spectators thought it was a real fight this gamo game was followed bv a league game between helper and price helper had the game won until the eighth when the locals nosed cut out by reason of heavy hitting and errors on the park part of the H helper alper ites see box score on page 3 A fair sized crowd saw the beginning but the loose playing of both teams had driven all but a dozen home when the finish came between the two ball games a greased pig was turna d loose with the announcement that the person who caught and held it by the tall tail could keep th taj 3 pork A of spanish dc descent scent named bill lyons caught and held tho the pig but it is suspected that he took an undue advantage of the razorback razor back after supper there were other sports in front of the bowery the yard dash was won by bill lyons with 0 al walk second the yard dash for league ball players was won by harold leonard with ala max schatz second and gene kersten third the alow slow animal raco race was won by a black mule from mt pleasant durell gunderson was first in the yard dash the team called the locals beat the boy scouts in the ball game in the morning the dance at the high school gym gyrn was w well ell attended netting a profit of better than 50 and all who attended had a good time it was a fitting close ti t a very successful celebration |
