Show Columbus Day Duly Observed " . ..... . We were all Americans and Ital-: Ital-: : ians here in Bingham-, Monday. Four hundred and thirty-four years ago, on that day, a' plucky Italian discovered our country. About seven years ago, Francis Quinn, a well ' . known Binghamite sponsored legis lation that made the anniversary of ; 1 .. this wonderful discovery a legal holi day in Utah. Francis was present in person at the big "doins" Monday and ' Colombus was so well impersonated by John Faraco that many of the old timers really thought it was . ' - Chris, himself who led the parade .s v and presided as Marshal of the day. Most everything was closed for the , occasion but the mines and for all z the rock that was put in box, by the few men who worked ,they might just as well have joined the celebra-. celebra-. , tion and made it unanimous. .',', The celebration was sponsored by the local Italian lodge and practical-, practical-, , . . ly its entire membership held com- . - - . mittee assignments. There was - V something doing every minute, from '. T , the beginning of the march up street of the parade, which was formed at Y Wgh school campus at 10 a. m., until the welcome notes ef "Home, Sweet Home" were sounded at a late hour in Canyon Hall to conclude one of the best dances of the season. . 0 Held's band was out from Sah Lake and furnished music throughout through-out the day. This excellent music ,v , was really a big feature of the ceje- 1 bration and especially did it serve to - . make the parade a cdmplete success. The procession which was comprised . . of the marshal, mounted upon a well groomed and elaborately decorated white mule, the band, members of the ':' ' ' Italian lodge, numbering more than 100 and decorated with their regalio, :' , followed by the children of the pub- lie schools carrying American and , Italian flags, was halted at the civic center in front of the City hall, v ' where the orator of the day, Judge Jr-V'' Dudley, delivered a splendid address on Columbua and his achievements. ; ' The speaker led his big audience on . . r, through an interesting: rehearsal of : the expositions and accomplishments of Columbus in spite of the super-' super-' . stition and ignorance of his people and wound up with an eloquent ap- . , , peal on the duties of good citizen- ship. ' i The usual program of sports was f. carried" out in which nearly all the Children won something and many ' ; adults carried off substantial prizes. " ' There were races of all kinds and ' contests galore. After summing up ' , the day's sport it appeared that the 'r' . consensus of opinion was that all - who had to do with the celebration were to be congratulated upon mak- ' ing it a wonderful success. |
