| Show 1 ON THE BEAM with at al one in a series of articles by albert W epperson on a recent trip with the national editorial association in maryland and virginia before leaving baltimore when the conven convention convente tl on was concluded we boarded buses tor for a trip to gettysburg in pennsylvania it was a whirl wind affair and we get to see n near ear enough of this tarn fare our battleground ot of civil war days our guide on the bus had a very interesting commentary of 0 the country through which wo we passed and in addition to the points of historical interest he pointed with pride to the farm recently purchased by pies and mrs eisenhower Elsen hower which borders on the famous gettys battleground area following lunch at the beautiful gettysburg hotel our buses returned to hagerstown Hagers town md and the plant of tho the fairchild aircraft corp here we had a most interesting afternoon at this installation that manufactures the famous flying dox box cars which are in use today by the U S air force in addition to a tour of the plant the neaera were privileged to witness an exhibition ot of the giant craft la in action this plane as its name indicates Is chiefly a cargo craft and pair fair child officials demonstrated the carrying of tour four jeeps and a number of men most remarkable phase of this large plane is its ability to take oft off and land in so BO small a space as well as its maneuverability it was quite a show they presented for the newspaper group from hagerstown Hagers town after a buffet supper at fairchild the editors departed tor for frederick we had passed through this city on our way to baltimore but we were happy to again visit it and see a fe few w points of interest it was at frederick you will remember where john greenleaf Green leat whittler whittier had the setting tor for that famous poem with barbara fritchie as the chief character in which she he Is alleged to have flaunted the union flag in the face of gen stonewall jackson and shouted shoot it if you must this old grey head but spare your nations flag she said arriving back in baltimore tor for our last night in this city we made preparations tor for our departure the next morning tor for a visit at annapolis if did you know that annapolis Is the capital city of maryland and not baltimore sure you did but w we anyway after a couple of hours drive we arrived at this interesting city which as everybody knows is the home ol of our U S naval academy the academy was rather a quiet place when we visited it as thel midshipmen were out to sea on their annual cruises we wera berei shown the many places of interest including the john paul jones crypt in which reposes all that is mortal of john paul jones that united states navy captain of rey rev war days interesting is the event on sept 23 1779 when john paul jones rose to supreme distinction sighting the superior british frigate convoying conveying 9 a fleet ot of 41 merchant ships jones jonea stood di directly r estly for or her and engaged as soon as aa possible lie ile captured his opponent alter after his own vessel the bonhomme richard had been practically shot from under him and she later sank despite the pump and every effort to save her with the bonhomme richards hold filled with water nearly all guns out of action halt the crew dead and birgs ires raging in many places the captain 0 of the hailed jones do you surrender captain pearson immediately had his reply twofold over the roar ot of battle as jones and his men boarded he shouting his immortal words our navys fighting slogan ever since 1 I have not yet begun to right fight following our tour oi of the academy we gathered at carvel hall one of the historic hotels of the area and a spot that rings a familiar bell in harking back to our reading of horatio alger stories it was here that gov theodore roosevelt mckeldin again addressed us and we then toured the state capitol building this structure grown beautiful with age Is the oldest state house in the nation that has continuously served as a seat of state government on visiting the house ot of representatives my friend 0 A mcdaniel publisher of the feder a als isburg burg times la in maryland showed me where his seat was and also demonstrated the voting procedure which lg Is recorded by a representative pressing a yes yea or no button at his desk which lights up corresponding lights on a wall ot of the room for all to see we also saw the governors man slon near the caP capitoni ItoI which Is a lovely red brick structure covered with ivy we were also told that the governors salary Is that his expense account will be liberal or scant depending on party parallel ot of 9 governor governor and legislature we wondered lust just how ro he publican gov mckeldin gets along with hla his democratic iles hes running for reelection ever so things cant bet t 00 rough to be continue d |
