Show MISS DAINES ARRIVES IN HOLLAND editors note this is third in a series of artial articles es by ali bliss ss josephine dairies daines morgan county home demonstration agent telling of her experiences last summer in europe studying home making and agrico agricultural itu ral phases on the continent we left paris the day after we arrived there as 0 our ur directions were vere to go directly to our country we stopped long enough to go to a reception for us given by the french young farmers club and struggled through the process of getting thain tickets to t the L hague my aly ane one year of high school french was a help but not enough early the next rooming mornin fr we went to catholic mass at the famous notre dame cathedral cathe dial on the isle of paris the structure of this old church is enormous and impressive impressive in itself the beautiful stained glass windows were especially impressive with the eaily caily morning sun shining through we tool took our last risk in a paris taxi and after several language difficulties we boarded the international train that took us from paris to brussels and on to the hague where the dutch government is located it was sunday evening july 3 when we arrived in holland it was fortunate foit for us that A A miss ii iss allen alien the cultural from our em aasby assy had received our wire and was there to meet us for we had no dutch money the hague is a city with a population as large ro PR the whole of utah yet we s saw acty ve ry few cars and a lot of people baw we found that dutch people ar arent t allowed to drive their cars on sundays gasoline rationed but i is s expensive and not too abundant the sundays help to conserve s er ve gas this keep everyone at home almost ev everyone owns a bicycle there and people crowded the beaches close by and parts of the city traveling by bicycle our introduction to holland did not quit here as the next day was the ath of july an american celebration A party was held by our embassy at the home of our ambassador bas mr baruch before going to the party mr air bolster our agriculture took evelyn haberman from kansas oscar schmidt from maryland and myself on a sight seeing tour of areas near the hague we saw some old churches windmills dykes and some of the farming area particularly the glass house area where crops such as peaches and tomatoes are grown under glass at the embassy party which abic h w was attended by almost Amen american caru we had wonderful ond e r f food i n 1 ud id ag american jum hot dogs fil and ice aced cream which just st a arent r e t d duplicated e in s europe drope the highlight of the party part pe to me was in meeting the numerous y people ople and especially the mormon mory missionaries from home A ambassador in bas baruch gave a short speech and both our national anthem and the dutch national anthem were played before leaving evelyn oscar and I 1 had the privilege of talking with the ambassador mr air baruch or mr air ambassador as he is always called is one of the well known baruch brothers he wasa was a very impressive and intelligent man whether we talked about Here herefords fords or oil he seemed to know all about it though he be was an obstetrician by profession this was our fourth of july celebration and quite different from those I 1 had known the next day we would be oft off to the north of the country and the farms we were to live on |
