camp lejeune we again boarded our buses for the trip to Ik wilson Vilson a beautiful city in east cast central north carolina and the worlds largest IPar bright leaf tobacco market markel we were taken that evening ial 0 a tobacco warehouse where our hosts at a barbecue supper were k M A va at wilson N C touring members of the NEA saw a sp ial to bacco auction scene put on like the one above ac e wilson chamber of commerce and the wilson daily times it was van here that the editors had their first taste of the singsong sing song chant bf f the tobacco auctioneer that so many had heard over the radio out so 0 o far had sean scan or heard in the flesh from wilson the party krave traveled led back to raleigh for the night bright bricht and early tuesday may 11 the editors left raleigh and traveled to durham for a short stop at duke university this uni reri 1 ity ta campus 1 5 is the most beautiful we had ever seen on a setting if et rolling hills Is in a heavily wooded and beautifully landscaped area duke auke university was founded by james B duke of tobacco fame in and includes trinity college for i nen men which originated in 1838 ahe he womans comans college college of engineering graduate school of arts mid sciences divinity school school of law medicine nursing and diffor forestry fore stry the buildings for the various schools and departments are located on two campuses of about 50 00 acres gothic architecture being the prevailing type on the west or university campus and georgian ajon n the cast or womans comans college campus most beautiful structure at puke uke is the Ale memorial morial chapel with spires rising feet and containing ning 50 carillon bells t we stop at chapel hill and then on to chapel hill site of americas first state university which opened on january 13 15 1791 1 i even then nearly a month passed sed before the first student arrived for two weeks he be was the intire student body but the significant thing about hinton james anlas iwas that he was the first state university student in america in our tour of the campus of the university of no north rth carolina the old buildings brought to our minds many events in history for f or it was tyas here that several presidents received their education and it was I 1 chere here that much history was written during the war between berwein the states from chapel hill the convention on wheels traveled westward to greensboro preen in time for lunch at the womans comans college of the university lifty of north carolina which was established in 1691 from a student tody sody of and a faculty of 13 15 the college has grown into one of the largest colleges for women in the country with a faculty of and hand a student body of 2200 after lunch served in the main dining cigarettes from ora there we were taken to our hotel the robert E lee and after I 1 brief fresh up we attended a press conference of presidential candidate andi date harold E stassen who was to speak in winston salem that evening we were told that winston and salem had been two separate cities in years gone by and that the officials of these two municipalities decided that in view of the proximity of the cities that they should 1 be e joined as one it was found however that winston had a large debt whereas samel had no debt to even the score it was necessary ar for the c city fathers of salem to assume a debt equal to that of Vins in tons stoWs therefore salem invested in huge marble curb stones jand lind scattered them hither and yon in the area where it was planned hat some future time streets might be constructed A visit at salem college 1 it was in winston salem that the editors had dinner on the earn cambus pus of salem college a beautiful old school of the south steeped in tradition di tion salem college was founded in 1772 by the moravian church as is a small day school from which it grew into a modero liberal arts college sol tol lege salem has a student body of of which 40 are men day itu students dents tuc lents near the college is the moravian cemetery where as many as persons have attended easter services all headstones in this I 1 cemetery seme teme tery are identical and interments inter ments are made in long rows ac bording to date of burial there are no family plots and men are linned in one section with women in another 1 on wednesday may 12 following breakfast at the robert E lee hotel otel at winston salem we boarded our buses for a trip west to the sity ty of f elkin where our friend of long standing harvey lafoon publishes the tribune immediately after our arrival we were taken on a tour of the chatham I 1 manufacturing company plant where we were sho shown wn the processes of making fine wool blankets as well as other materials uch as automobile upholstery woolen yard goods and other related materials the tour through this plant was most interesting and editors nors were shown from the raw wool to the finished products luncheon followed the tour of the plant was served at bilwin roth ath Y M C A where the hosts were the elkin tribune and the elkin kiwanis club it was here that we had our first view of typical southern square square dancing in when the championship team of the chatham manufacturing fac turing co company gave a performance leaving elkin following luncheon we were taken over the sky on linc e drive in the beautiful blue ridge mountains no where will one bec e e a more beautiful mountainous country with thick vegetation on the oiling ling hill bill as far as the eye can see western north carolina need lot t take a back seat from any part of this country as the scenery in his is area is marvelous we were fortunate in making this skyline trip n a private car with the charles hardys of ga after our trip through the mountains we arrived at asheville clr Siv here we were to spend the next three days with trips to points of interest terest outside the city more about north carolina
