Show trout planted tuesday in weber river by daisy crouch one hundred and twenty five thousand fish small fry were planted last snoday and tuesday n the tributaries tributa ries of the we weber ber river in afra morgan an county burke Dic diceson Dirt lson son ass assistant stant superintendent of the morgan county fish hatchery y told the news saturday this led to questions and answers and finally a hearty invitation n to the hatchery T come e to tuesday mo morning anin g at ten to witness the operation of spawning ll 11 it was an ideal winter morning the su sun n was shining and everything thin 0 in this perfectly situated fish bat hatchery chery wb which ich I 1 am told 1 is S second to none in in the state 01 of utah was has quiet and orderly alevy A few visitors VZ were present to watch th the e work being done bupt supt murdock welcomed us and gewere taken to a building where we wate watershed shed the process with much interest inside the building the water is divided into four sections with a narrow runway with a small outlet to the pool outside running through the center A stand into which a galvanized tub and two small tin basins fitted was in one section where the large fish were confined the men caught the fish in a net and emptied them in the tub which contained some water here the excited fish splashed and cavorted around for a few minutes and as they quieted down the men proceeded to work on them if the fish was not ready to strip it would be thrown into another section of the water if it was ready the men gently pressed the eggs or sperm from the fish into the bisin basin and the stripped fish was thrown into the runway leading in to fr freedom for a period of a N year ear we lve were told that is about t the he length e mgt h of time before the fish would be ready for stripping again the female gives grom to aw eggs at a time according to the size of the fish usually in spawning for best results it takes three females to one male the sperm from the male fish is gently shaken around the eggs of the female and we were told that if we could see through a microscope we would observe the sperm of the male darting here and there covering the eggs ages the eggs axe are gently washed in several waters and then placed in a barrel ready to take to another hatchery to be hatched the period of hatching time var varies according to the temperature of the water in midway the time of hatching is about 21 days with an average of 00 96 per cent of the eggs maturing maturing at kamas about 32 days are required for hatching with an average of 93 95 per cent matured at logan about the same as kamas in bl morgan organ where the water is much colder it requires about 61 days for hatching and the average hatch batch would be a little less during the process from the to the irth day a change is noticed in the egg the two eyes begin to form and gradually the fishs fichs body begins to encircle the egg this is called the egg sack as it commences to absorb the sack it cornea comes to the surface of the water and starts to swim after the whole sack is absorbed the time for feeding is commenced A mixture of ground beef lungs spleens spleeny and liver with shorts added as roughage is given the small fry the mixture is ground as many as seven times until it is the consistency sis tency of milk and it is scattered on en the water for feed everything depends upon t the h e temperature of the water if the water is too cold the growing period is longer it takes almost IS 38 months for the small fry to grow to legal size which is seven inches and we were very much surprised to learn that some fish live to be I 1 11 I 1 years old monday of this week OK rainbow trout were planted in the morgan hatchery later they will be turned into the tributaries tributa ries in the mountains and eventually they will find their way into the weber river the german browns are more d domesticated and seem to do better in this part of the country last summer near devils slide a german brown was caught weighing 11 pounds brook trout do well in the smaller streams with all this work going on by the state and through the interest of the men working in our hatchery ery in a couple of years 0 our u r streams will be so well stocked with fis fish h that morgan county will be the mecca tor for fishermen from all ove over r the country |
