| Show red cross makes grant for navajo relief washington D C the american red cross on dec 9 appropriated for immediate stopgap stop gap aid for indians on the navajo and hopi reservations in utah arizona and new mexia mexico co it was announced by basil oconnor red cross president the appropriation was made for immediate use pending action on an emergency bill now before congress funds allotted by the national red cross will be used to supplement assistance now being provided through the bureau of indian affairs and navajo tribal funds quick action in affording the indians aid through the navajo service red cross chapter at window rock ariz was assured by the red cross agent two trained disaster relief workers richard gordon and richard T van metre jr both of san francisco were dispatched today to assist the window rock chapter gordon is disaster relief director of the pacific area of the red cross van metre is is assistant director of home service they will begin immediately to meet the basic needs of the indians including supplementary food and clothing the supplies will ie be purchased through the normal channels of trade on the reservation mr oconnor explained james stewart superintendent of the reservation has given the red cross assurances that his own awn staff will work with the red cross in insuring family and individual needs according to ramone S eaton red cross vice president in charge of the pacific area the junior red cross already has provided navajo children on the reservation with worth of supplies which include cod liver oil eye glasses first aid kits and wool cloth an additional worth of supplies now is being procured and this will include wool blankets worth of educational cat ional equipment pairs of eye glasses and first aid kits |
