Show LINES by LIZA no I 1 been on a vacation folks in fact I 1 had a vacation the real relaxing kind for a long long on time perhaps there is n no 0 su such e h t thing h i n g a as sa a v vacation a c ae i 0 n 1 in n t this hoi s c crowded r 0 w d c d a age g e W we t take a k a m motor 0 t r trip or go to a convention or take time off from regular jobs to do more urgent jobs but no matter what we do we do it in a rush hurry worry flurry if it were not for the immeasurable privilege of being an american I 1 should like to be a placid chinese they live long lives slowly and never miss a trick darn smart people the chinese on an average we do not take time as we should to observe the courtesies and pleasantries pleasant ries of everyday every day gracious living there again we are missing something the chinese have kept intact for hundreds of years the exceptions are mighty pleasant though anna sommers brought me a letter which illustrates my point at the recent national convention of county officials which was held in salt lake city it was my privilege to assist anna dorothy and daisy as one of the hostesses we met many fine and interesting people representing nearly every state in the union alabama sent the largest delegation of approximately charming soft spoken southern ladies and gentlemen sho sam among them was one mr air G mae mac humphries treasurer of baldwin county alabama his young son on a short leave from san francisco where he be is stationed with the navy met met his father in salt lake city for a brief visit all of us found them inter interesting e sting and took a quiet share in their pleasure in being together so o o o the other day comes this letter from mr humphries part of which I 1 quote 1 I want you to know that I 1 feel very grateful to you for the courtesies shown me while I 1 was in salt lake city also the kindness extended my son is greatly appreciated precia ted too we both will always feel kindly toward utah you people there are so wholesome genuine and hospitable pi table since nay my visit there I 1 have become a press agent for utah and her people my visit was very enjoyable and I 1 shall always remember you good people I 1 warn you too that it I 1 is S my purpose to return for another visit at the very first opportunity I 1 have being with you all made my visit most pleasant you see what I 1 mean its nice to know people like you of course I 1 think anna and dorothy and daisy all of whom radiate friendliness and interest would induce anyone to like utah they are as fine examples of western women as our state produces and there are many more just like them that will cost you two bits piece apiece a ladies speaking of that same convention and utah I 1 want to tell you that many of the delegates who had never traveled west before expressed surprise and admiration for our state and our people I 1 do not know quite what they expected but evidently found us much in in advance of their expectations one gentleman and his wife from virginia told me that salt lake C city ity was a shock to them he remarked particularly about the general appearance pe arance of intelligence happiness and cleanliness of the passersby passers by on the street he asked whether or not it was true throughout the whole state or whether salt lake people were showing off for the centennial I 1 told him that our utah people had always looked the same so far back as I 1 could remember aint it the truth my friends friend the county clerk of yavapai county ariz says he is not going to be in such a hurry to depart next time either ile he says he is going to allow for demurrage I 1 am wondering if he would be interesting te in someone demure to demur him speaking travelers I 1 must tell you y ou something soT silly but really ili his honor our mayor told me that while he was flagging cars one day and acquiring his flaming pro biscus a new york car with a lone woman driver was patiently tagging in the rear rear of one of those immense pacific interstate express trucks As the procession stopped in obedience to the signal she called to the mayor and said 1 I notice all these big trucks have PIE on the side are they really used for hauling pies oh yes indeed said the glib mayor mayor they are loaded with pies every one of them cocoanut coco anut cream too my gracious gasped the lady as she drove westward where tall tales grow taller lets all go to lagoon with the sunday school kids next wednesday shall we huh hub |
