Show I 1 service BUREAU EDITORS NOTE this newspaper through special arrangement with the washington ington bureau of western newspaper union of at 1616 eye street tree N W frai washington hington D C is able a ae to bring readers this weekly column on problems of 0 the veteran and serviceman sert iceman cernan and his hii family questions may be addressed to te the above bureau and they will be a answered n in a subsequent column no replies can he be made direct by mail I 1 but only in the column which thich will op ap pear in this newspaper paper regularly citizenship for alien vets veterans administration announces that approximately aliens who served in the armed forces during the war have less than two months in which to take advantage of quick citizenship under the second war powers act of 1942 the act expires december 31 and effects all aliens who enlisted or were inducted into the service before december 28 1945 those effected are not required to file the customary declaration of intention and need not have lived in the U S tor for any specified time also the alien petitioner is not required required to speak sp eak the english language meet any educational tests or pay any fees tor for filing his petition alth although ou gh this statute is administered by the 1 immigration and naturalization service of the department ot of justice VA publicized the law through its field offices and advised eligible alien veterans as to their naturalization rights honorably discharged aliens who wish to take advantage i of the law should apply to the nearest office of the immigration and naturalization service or inquire at their nearest VA office for further information questions and answers Q I 1 was discharged july 19 1916 1919 at shoemaker calif at that time I 1 enlisted as a fireman first class in class V 6 U S naval reserve and was released to inactive duty I 1 was informed by one of the officers there that I 1 could change my rate to seaman first class and get courses to advance in rate by writing to commandant ninth naval district naval training center great lakes III during the past two months I 1 have written two letters to this commanding officer but have never received an answer I 1 have thought of requesting discharge to see if I 1 could get an answer th that at amy but I 1 would rather be hi the naval reserve it if I 1 could get my rate changed please advise me of any way to get action on this subject E E F loup city neb A suggest that you write direct to the bureau of naval personnel navy department washington 25 D C and explain your situation you will receive a prompt answer Q we have a boy buried overseas that we want brought home our american legion said they were bring bringing eing all the boys home and we didat need to put in a request that when they hey got to each place they would notify next of kin I 1 read in the newspapers that a request must be put in to the government so please tell us what we must do and where to write such a request there are many others who dont know where to write mrs 0 B union city ind A write to memorial division office of the quartermaster general a 1 war department washington D C give your sons full name and all details of his death that you know the army is now polling next of kin who desire to have their rela tives lives returned or final burial next of kin have option ot of requesting 1 having remains returned to the U S A for final interment in in a national cemetery the cost to be borne entirely by the government 2 returning the remains to the states for burial by next ot of kin in a private cemetery the government to pay 50 toward cost of local interment expense and all cost of shipping the body home or 3 burying the deceased in a permanent american military cemetery overseas Q my daughters fiance who Is a regular army man has not given her any news since november IM ile he was with company A of FD and that outfit was deactivated and he was transferred to battery C field artillery ile he was with this last outfit nhen alien be wrote he would be home by christmas and that was the last she heard from him all her letters have been returned can you help her mrs 0 T dub denver colo A the only information I 1 can give is that battery C field artillery was deactivated in 1945 the army is unable to give me reassignment ot of personnel not eligible for discharge Q I 1 am writing you to see if I 1 can get a mothers pension my illy son is in the army overseas mrs airs III M B harper kans A no you are not entitled to a pension your son however it if he desires may take out a monthly allotment tor for you Q my son was killed in action and I 1 am receiving a pension due to my health I 1 am not able to work all the time but it I 1 should work part time would my pension be stopped 51 mrs rs M U H IV val oal ton ga A no |
