Show to the people of morgan city at a recent meeting of the morgan city council a petition was presented asking that an election be called to decide whether or not morgan city should sell its power distribution system we as a council wish to do those things that are desired by a majority of the people however there are a few matters which we feel should be presented to the people concerning our power system before such a step as the above me mentioned election is taken first this is the only business that is bringing revenue into morgan city it is helping to maintain a a city office and provides work for local men it provides the money to repair and maintain our distribution system and will help to provide other improvements in our city if we sell out now this profit will go to the purchasers of the system second service that is given now is as good as we could expect from any other company for this reason they will have one man responsible for morgan county as we maintain one in the city now should there be serious trouble from storms or other causes the men and equipment of the company would be used in the larger centers and not an in outlying areas our service the would be much the same as we have now third there is much discussion disc of our higher power rate as compared with utah power light companas Comp anys rates it is true that our rates are higher but we have the power used in our street lights and by the city pump in the wat department which must be paid for from the city funds there are two ways these services can be financed we must either charge a higher rate for foi electricity or we must LEVY A PROPERTY TAX for this purpose in the first instance everyone who uses power helps to maintain the street lights and the city pump in the other case the entire burden will fall upon afie the property owners of the city the council has felt that the first course is the better way to pay for this power as it would take approximately another three and one half 3 mills in taxation to pay for these services respectfully submitted MORGAN CITY COUNCIL F L PARKINSON mayor |
