Show ff 0 EDITORS NOTE this newspaper J 1 through special arrangement with the washington bureau of western newspaper union at 1616 eye street N W T washington D DC C is able to bring readers this weekly column on problems ol of the veteran and serviceman and his family questions may be addressed to the above bureau and they will be answered a in a subsequent column no replies can be made direct by mail but only in the column chich will ivill appear r in this newspaper regularly on onfre the farm training one year after VJ V J day saw veterans of 0 world war II 11 enrolled in some form of education or training under the two laws providing such facilities for war veterans according to gen omar N bradley VA director the greatest problem facing the GI educational and training program Is that of the colleges in securing teachers rs and in providing classrooms and living quarters for or this tremendous influx of students general bradley predicted that in the next year this figure would be doubled one of the newer forms of education is on the farm training combining class work with practical supervised per farming to supplement the educational program VA has prevailed upon the army and navy for release of more than text books for veterans studying under public law 16 and the GI bill general bradley expressed concern over failure of the veterans to take advantage of their government insurance less than one out of tour four veterans have premiums up to date on government insurance and almost eligible veterans are now naw without national service life insurance while originally 95 per cent of them carried the insurance when they were in the armed services in other words 90 billion dollars worth of economic security has been permitted to lapse one of the important objectives of VA during the corning coming year will be help to veterans in reinstating in their insurance questions and answers Q my aly husband joined the army april 1 1346 1946 we have two c children hil two and four years of age also a good farm cows mules hogs and chickens I 1 must care tor for all of these things we got the farm worked this year by my helping to do much of the work which I 1 was unable to do my aly health is not good I 1 am 26 years old and he be is 29 will be SO 30 in february I 1 have no one to stay with me except his 70 year old mother lie he wants to get out of the army and work his bis farm next year Is there any chance please whelp help me mrs birs D W T Al moulton oulton ala A he should have no trouble obtaining his discharge since he is a father suggest he contact his commanding officer and apply for his discharge Q during 30 mouths months of army service I 1 sent my parents an allotment every month now my parents are arc dead can I 1 collect the amount I 1 sent them from their estate when sold C W 1 green pond ala A this is a legal question and you should consult a lawyer Q I 1 am a widow with one son w who he Is now 16 years old aid an aged father in law aged 82 and another ion son serving overseas I 1 get a family allowance which Is insufficient to supply the needs of our ho household and the stock etc living expenses have risen as you know would I 1 be permitted to take a job to supplement the family allowance and still be entitled to it stairs Airs ba M A al dana N C A there is no reason why you take a job Q can you tell me where the infantry is now are they discharged they trained in camp white ore and later went to san luis obispo calif and were shipped to the pacific il P wood calif I 1 A the army says the infantry was in activated february 3 1946 Q I 1 was discharged with a medical disability from the navy in world war I 1 with tuberculosis and am unable to do manual labor can you help me in any way A you should apply to your nearest office of the veterans administration and ask for a disability rating it if your illness was the result of your navy service it would be a service connected disability but even if it is not service connect ed you likely would be entitled to a disability pension Q my father entered service nearly three years ago claiming he was a tingle man and not naming his children as dependents lie was discharged a few months ago and we never received allotments during the entire time he be was in service we were all under III 18 years of age Is there anything we could do about it now miss 51 L C ceredo IV va A I 1 am afraid there Is nothing to be done now to be sure however you might write to the office of dependency claims war department part ment newark 2 N J |
