Show lo 10 FLY an AIRPLANE I 1 k kif ea kewus kiwe BASIC FLIGHT instruction LESSON NUMBER TWO ha hank well veil I 1 can tell you I 1 dont sim aim to be grounded I 1 an am going to learn to fly and that rob robinson and d im sure you ya will ill learn but dont ever think youve learned it all when you find end out theres a whale ot of a lot more to learn leam that only experience can teach you another thing dont ever be careless with your plane treat it as your most prized possession dont depend on anybody else after the best ground roan man he has 3 go gone ne over it you go over it yourself hank but I 1 thought dial aaa was the ground mans mani job to tee see that the plane plane is in perfect shape how flow would I 1 know if something were wrong robinson part of what have to learn have to learn every inch of her what everything Is for how and why it functions and when its it la in tune and when something Is sour remember the ground man fly the plane he cant know her as the pilot does get so you can listen to her and in ten seconds know if ashes right or in time e develop something like e a six sixth sense know when something Is wrong even if you cant explain how you know it hank sounds wonderful I 1 sure hope I 1 develop that sixth sense senje robinson A good pilot always does because of a strange oneness between a true pilot and his plane but lets get on with the instruction ill climb in and take the back seat and this Is the time I 1 get to be a back seat driver hank but if youre back of me how do you know robinson how do I 1 know going on in front simple this Is a dual control plane all training planes are the instructor tits sits behind the student and has duplicates cates of the controls and instrument which are provided tor for the student meant by dual control you can pilot the plane from your front seat or I 1 can pilot phot robinson well hank how do you feel now ready to take off hank aarin to go bill robinson finel fine I 1 got your helmet and goggles hank right highl here robinson and how much do you remember of at what I 1 told you this morning hank I 1 believe I 1 remember everything I 1 grabbed a bits bite of lunch and came back over here to have another took look over the plane that gave me a chance to so get everything fixed in a my nind robinson robenson good ideal and this first trip will make it all much clearer to you all right climb in a ana tic don dont t forget arget what I 1 told you about putting your feet where they belong it now sit down feel comfortable for table hank sure robinson now the first thing you do hank I 1 put pug on my helmet and goggles fasten my safety belt and move the controls a bit to find out if they are working right robinson finel you seem to have the right idea so far now ill climb into the other seat and be sure you dont touch the controls until I 1 tell you to do so put on your earphones and remember DONT touch anything until I 1 give the word can you hear me clearly clear lyt hank flank clear as can be robinson good all right careyl lets get her going casey switch off and throttle closed robinson switch off and throttle closed now hank after casey gets compression hell tell me to put the switch on hell do that by just yelling contact casey contact robinson contact all right hank here we gol now watch everything ery thing watch everything that moves on the instrument board watch everything that moves everyl everywhere and see what happens when they move keep your ears and have to give them more power by a wider sweep now well taxi the tha plane down the field for a takeoff take off hankard hank Han kAre are we tee going up today robinson were going up my lad as soon as we can get her off the ground hank gee arn an I 1 excited excite dl robinson better forget being excited hank and keep your ears and eyes and your mind on the j job ob listen carefully keep your left hand on the throttle and your right hand on the stick remember that you must do that every time you taxi a plane now push the stick forward a ittle to lilt lift the tall tail if you dont lift the tail it drags on the ground and strains the whole works now tor for the throttle give it the gas in spurts at first but not too much at a time if you shoot too much gas at a time the torque of your propeller will swing the plane around to the right hank the torque robinson the torque of the propeller is really a reaction of the propeller which makes the nose of the plane swing to the direction opposite that in which the propeller is turning to compensate for the torque you apply a slight right rudder pressure when you give her the gas now hatchl ill give her the gas and at the same time ill put the stick forward and use a little right rudder and put the throttle back that so she wont be running along the ground too fast do you get it hank anac I 1 get it robinson now you take the controls and try it out dont give her too much gas till you get the swing of it goedl feel the tall tail lift off the runway hank sure did robinson give her the gas again and watch the rudder bar you let her swing wide that time you have to know how to taxi straight or you dont clont know how bow to fly straight goedl now youve got III it and one thing about takeoffs take offs at the start that AILERON PRO PELLER CONTROL STICK fa EFI E I 1 CONTROL BOARD VERTICAL FIN r no S E stabilizer rudders PEDALS PILOTS CABIN GEAR p FUSELAGE TAIL WHEEL Si deview of cabin plane the arrows indicate the most important parts it from the back teat seat and I 1 can watch what you are doing and take over the instant theres there danger ot of your getting into trouble hank what a marvelous marve loui arrange mem robinson yes so tar far as a la Is humanly possible everything has been done to make flying as a sate safe as walking on the sidewalk now put on your headset hank I 1 was itoi going to ask you about that buhy do I 1 have to have a head let get robinson when you are actually flying eying the noise ot of the engine and the rush of the air make such a roar that you cant hear yourself think in order for or rne me to be able to give instructions and directions you and I 1 have to be coupled up by head pieces with earphones of 01 course alter after you are a qualified pilot use your earphones in connection with your radio equipment tor for contact with flying field control rooms hank but passengers in commer commercial cM planes dont dons have any trouble hearing to tach ch other robinson ot of course no t but they ire are in a soundproof sound proof c cabin abin were open on all tides sides now put on your headset feel comfortable ilan 11 an k perfectly robinson okay now well have a tryout at talking through the set let me do the talking just listen nd and answer me can you heart bear hank clear as a bell robinson fine now bold the stick no dont grab it just take hold of it easy like thata better now mow put your feet on the rudder bar move them a little and look out at the alle ailerons rons now back to the rudder and elevators see how everything works together are you getting the idea hank flank sure am I 1 could almost get ler ker og off the ground robinson almost Is right but not yet ret maybe next time well take her off ff but I 1 think weve done enough tor for the first session youve got the feel eel of the plane and that the very arst thing to accomplish so take IT ff your headphone and climb out a reful now be sure to put your toot foot where your toot foot belongs on the footplate that good now lets see consults his watch get yourself lome lunch and be back here at two clock this afternoon and well go tt it it again flank be here on h eyes on the job all the time learn a lot that way all set hank hank blank all set let robinson now tor for some general instructions on taxiing a plane of course the term tax taxiing ying tag simply means that the plane Is rolling roiling over the ground under its own power as it must at every takeoff take off and every landing its always best to taxi into the wind but not always pos possible sible since the object of taxiing a plane Is to get it into proper position for a takeoff take off hank but suppose the winds in tho the wrong direction robinson the wind frequently Is in the wrong direction and you have to understand what that means you see a plane Is like a weather vane it has a tendency to swing under wind pressure until the nose Is headed into the wind which is all right it if the direction you must take to reach the point of takeoff take off when you taxi into the wa wind nd the strength streng th of the propeller blast is increased by the force of the wind and that acts favorably on the controls hank the wind seems to play a big pa part a in flying robinson certainly and why not wind is only air in motion and flying is the motion of the plane through the air but back to wind and tax taxiing ying A plane Is built to go ahead and the controls are not so effective in a tail wind the controls are designed to utilize the force of air resulting from the forward movement if you have to taxi down wind and must make a turn to take off into the wind because of the slowness of the plane to respond be sure to make the turn long before you come near any obstacles and when it is possible its lt better to tack slightly because the plane Is more readily controlled in taxiing in a cross wind than in a tail wind hank flank now let lei me see ij if I 1 understand what youve told me always taxi into the wind it if pos possible ible dont dons taxi doun wind if i it can be be aoi avoided ded and it if its not possible to taxi into inso the die wind it s better to tuck luck because a cro crow llwin wind taxi is easier than a downwind dmn do unwind wind taxi robinson the idea at least you have the rule in your mind though you may not yet understand the reason tor for it all now another thing the speed in taxiing is much less than in flight bight and the controls are less lesoon ave you la is while youre learning always take off into the wind when you are a qualified pilot know how to take off cross wind but never take off do down wn wind unless in case ol of emergency lank hank emergency what do you mean by that robinson well you see if you are taking off under ordinary circumstances cum curn stances from a flying field the field will be laid out so that you take off either into the wind or cross wind but suppose youve had to make a forced landing somewhere in a field for instance you might tad find yourself in a spot where theres a long open space ahead of you but bul the winds at your back you have much choice but to make your takeoff take off with a tall tail wind and be the same difficulties I 1 TOO SHALLOW JUST RIGHT TOO STEEP J in making that kind of takeoff take off 89 a 1 I just explained in taxiing down clown wind hank oh I 1 see lee what you mean never downwind down wind unless youre in a spot where you have to do it Ro robinson bUison it now were ready tor for the takeoff take off keep your hands on your knees relax and watch first I 1 push the stick slightly forward so that the tall tail is off the ground now I 1 give her plenty of gas to gain speed As I 1 feel the wheels leave the ground 1 I pull the stick straight back see how we start to climb we will fly straight ahead and continue to climb until we are up feet watch the board see the altimeter indicating that we are climbing now well turn to the left by moving the stick slightly to the lift left and pushing push ing the left rudder notice the stick and the rudder bar and how they move and how the plane responds looks very simple and its just as simple as it looks once you know the why and the wherefore of it now weve got the wind on our tail and in a moment or two well be back over the air field heyl keep your feet oil off the rudder bar and your handy off that |
