Show soil conservation range practices insures productivity the cooperators of the morgan soil conservation district took a long lone step forward in promoting better land use ond and conservation of soil and water on acres of farm and ranch 1 land a n d in morgan county during 1914 labig b but ti t a big job still remains ahead 0 W rollins chairman of the board of supervisors said conservation means greater production for the farmer and livestock man many utah farmers report that they have increased their yields 20 per cent or more by following conservation practices mr rollins said besides increasing production conservation farming and good range management also insures the future productivity of our fields and pastures it means that what has happened to millions of once fertile farmlands in the south and in the appalachians lac lach hians lans will not happen here the district he said planted acres of irrigated pasture acres or of sage land was cleared and linear feet of stream bank was stabilized bili zed during 1944 district members followed recommended crop rotations on acres and practiced crop residue management on acres irrigation improvements have been completed on 30 farms with resultant savings in water and higher crop yields more than acres have been leveled linear feet of new ditch channel has been constructed and 27 miles of 0 ditch cleared ranchers controlling a cres acres ab of 0 f land in the district have boosted beet e e f pr production d action by better range management including such measures as adjusting stock numbers to the forage supply deferred and rotation grazing I 1 and better distribution of animals I 1 about acres of abandoned aban donel farmland and denuded range sagebrush range has been re seeded to pasture grasses gra S e S the morgan district was organized october 28 1938 with an area of acres since then additional acres were included within its boundaries at the request of landowners this is one of 31 such organizations in utah which now have a total area of acres under provisions nf ft an agreement with soil conservation service technical assistance and available equipment are provided to aid in carr carrying vinz out the district program mr rollins said affairs of the district are managed by a board of supervisors which in addition to mr rollins includes mark thackeray samuel F hopkin C E rich and herbert whittier district plans for 1945 have now beeri and the greatest emphasis will be placed on development and improvement of irrigation systems to meet the new food goals |
