Show PROGRAM OF THE DAY 1 plans for the postwar period are the program of the day in many existing org organizations animations and some groups art am springing into existence in order to function during postwar period the american legion and the american legion auxiliary know full well that the postwar period is not a matter of the future it is here here for the wives mothers sisters of those who have given their full measure of devotion it is here for the boys in the veterans administration facilities and the army and navy hospitals and they are working to this end working and planning and are ever at the call of those suffering from the ravages of war the american legion and its auxiliary served well yesterday and the days before and stand ready for tomorrow the returning veterans will be the leaders in this community and only through united organization can we take the greatest interest in civic affairs when this war is over hundreds of towns and cities will create war memorials to those men who are now fighting on foreign shores the old fashioned monuments of the revolutionary war the civil war the spanish american war and world war I 1 are being replaced with living war memorials which combine the spirit of commemoration and utility for these let us not erect arches shafts or sculptured monuments let us instead build schools hospitals playgrounds re recreation c centers which will serve the people of the whole community many communities are now planning to erect memorials which twill perpetuate the memory of those who have fallen in pur our wars and which also are expressive of the living ideals which motivated them to make the supreme sacrifice living war memorials symbolize to the men and women in our armed forces a great many of the things for which these men and women are fighting and a great many things for which they will be coming home to enjoy when the war is over let us dedicate these memorials to the dead but let us also dedicate them to the living and to the promise of the future I 1 the needs of a community should determine the form that a memorial should take thing to consider in the establishment of a living war memo memorial fial is to build or ta establish the kind or type of memorial which will unite people into a strong community unit memorials have little value to a community if they are not living memorials or if they are arc only beautiful and restricted in use to few people or perhaps none A memorial should serve the greatest possible number of people perpetuate the memory of those who gave their lives to their community honor those men and women who served their country in the armed forces have facilities which will serve the entire community young and old for 12 months of every year provide for the welfare of the mer men and women of the armed forces as th they ey are discharged from service THE CIVIC CENTER the lenter is a symbol of an ideal at n morgan city and county it might well serve a vital need the erection of such a building adequately equipped with facilities for serving all the people and providing recreation and social and educational training and growth for the youth of the county will certainly meet favorable consideration from the people of morgan county this memorial might provide an auditorium including stage and removable seating for shows concerts lectures movies etc A gymnasium with equipment for games for young and old including showers and lockers the inclusion ol of clubrooms for service organizations civic clubs ladies clubs boy and girl scouts etc and storage space rest rooms office space and rooms for city and county officials rationing agencies etc A kitchen with facilities for preparing and serving meals A lobby or lounge including fireplace morgan county certainly has need for a civic center where every child might find clean wholesome recreation for 12 months of the year where each outlying community might havia scheduled period in gym and auditorium where adults might enjoy so bials and games A better relationship and cooperative effort would certainly result and thereby mold the pattern of an integrated community life through the community center we appeal to the members of the city council county commissioners the lions club and other interested individuals to give this civic center your earnest consideration clair wright commander morgan post no 67 |
