Show mormon leaders pushed development V A 01 t utah has risen into prominence as one ot of the great raw resource centers of 0 the world the growth of 0 its mines has been steady and cooperation from the state has a vital part the following extracts from rom a letter written by brigham young on april 10 1873 to the editor ot of the new york herald Is an indication 0 of the early encouragement given capital we have another railroad here doing good business the utah southern Is built about 32 33 miles narrow gauge roads roada connected with this are being constructed into little cottonwood bingham canyon and american pork fork to meet the demand tor for transportation to and from the various mining camps ot of these regions region the utah northern Is being constructed from a junction with the central pacific through our principal northern settlements into southeastern idaho and other narrow gauge roads are in construction or in contemplo tion lion in utah we have a line fine country for or stock raising and agriculture and abundance of 0 minerals awaiting development and we welcome all good citizens who love peace and good order to come and settle with us it has been our policy from the first to promote the agricultural interests seeing this was the foundation ot of all others and we have been tor for years furnishing staple products to the surrounding states and territories and we are ar now able to supply any demand likely to arise for or grain vegetables etc at the market prices to those engaged in mining pursuits we have iron ores and coal in rich abundance we have called in every department ot of business but we lack capital and there is no safer place to be found in the united states where property of almost every kind is less taxed and better protected all reports to the contrary notwithstanding |
