Show survey given on proposed tax Exempt exemptions iong school districts in utah would I 1 lose OZ e in revenue it if the proposed homestead exemption law is approved proved and school tax levies would raise from 9 to 37 mills the public officials educational committee disclosed monday the report was made in connection with the organizations independent pren dent investigation into possible effects passage of the proposal would have upon finan financing eing and credit of local government units i chairman B F quinn explained urging school officials and patrons and all friends of ed education ti cation generally to study the report the committee charges if the amendment is approved school boards will be confronted with certain inescapable alternatives listed is as foi follows 1 lower effi efficiency clency and reduced present service 2 increase the levy on all remaining taxable property in each district 3 assess general property in each district at full value which although authorized in the constitution has not been done 4 find revenues from some etheri other sources or in some other manner but with the understanding and full ful i knowledge that these revenues come exclusively from the taxpayers this committee has not accepted lor or assumed the responsibility to I 1 discuss alternatives or to suggest to the voters which of the horns of the dilemma they should seize said mr quinn nor the feasibility of plans that may from time to time be projected to obtain revenues ample and sufficient to maintain our schools at the present high level admittedly that will always be a highly controversial subject to be fought 0 out at each legislative session it idour belief that the heads of our local school units may well use the statistics here presented as the oasis basis for a statement to their respective spec tive citizens to show what effect f this proposed reduction in the volume of revenues may have upon their own schools in this manner an intelligent vote is made possible in conclusion we wish to repeat what is emphasized by tax authorities that there is no such th thing ina g as a tax exempt citizen so long as he is obliged to buy commodities or services of whatever nature or character because becaas whether he pays pay S directly or indirectly he the ultimate consumer pays the tax |
