| Show THE SPANISH AMERICAN WAR IVAR OF 1898 AND 1899 the spanish american war was overshadowed by the world wa war r and when compared with that great conflict it was small indeed but it was entered into for the sake of humanity to help one of our next door neighbors to escape from the clutches of spanish tyranny and the peculiarity rity of this little war we got into was this according to european judgement jud gement we were bound to loose they said we had no army we had no navy nor were we prepared with any medical service so we could look for nothing but disaster but glands En send off was waa better she said on account of our great natural resources the end was inevitable but not before our fleet was sunk and many of our coast towns laid in in ashes this she though would spur americans on to victory but not a ship was lost nor any of our armies destro destroyed y ed and our cities kept on flourishing commodore dewey entered the almost impregnable harbor of manila and destroyed the spanish fleet which was considered conil dered equal if not superior to the american fleet the night before the battle of manila bay a great party was held inside the walled city the spanish admiral and leading officers of the army made plans to go right after commodore dewey whom they thought was hiding somewhere in the china sea the spanish fleet was about eq ual in mern members bers and were supported by the kaupp guns of the fort their fleet was destroyed and the worst damage the americans had was that their smoke starks stacks had the appearance appear appe arane anc of selves after manila was taken the natives wanted to rush in and loot the town the americans had a hard tussle to keep them back but through their courageous work only a few depredations were committed the americans took an army of prisoners practically as large as their own through bhe civil treatment these prisoners received they were soon good friends of the americans we captured the philippine islands and paid spain millions of 0 dollars for her investments there we had spain at our mercy we could have demanded anything but instead we paid her millions of dollars for her improvements on the islands we turned cuba back to the cubans and twice we have helped them to settle their own difficulties after making a great country out of the philippine islands by teaching the people how to govern themselves we have now practically given them complete inde pen dance contrast this with the treatment etheopia is receiving from italy old glory stands for liberty and justice tor for all after the filipinos were freed from spanish don domination and practically given their political freedom they had a greater admiration mi ration for the american people this stimulated commerce which brought to our country far greater revenue than the cost of the war to our government and all thel that has been paid to the soldiers in pensions or otherwise this was accomplished by an army who had the of being the only one hundred per cent volunteer army ever to serve in the united states in time ol of war this war also put the united states on the map with powers and since that time have been very much cons considered I 1 dered in time of war so it is too bad that our school histories do not take it up more fully than they have done many of our leading officers in the world war were spanish american soldiers of 1898 and 1899 general pershing who was in command of the american soldiers was wa s a captain in the spanish american war general frank J hines was a sargent in the same war but he arose to be one of the ranking generals of the world in transportation in a years time he 1 put on european soil over two million soldiers and never had a transport lost nor a blunder made so as americans we should be proud of our spanish american soldiers for what they did for this country both finan financially cilly and in producing the leading officers in our late world war morgan countes Coun tys part in that war should not be forgotten at the first call of pres mckinley McK D M anderson and reinhardt olsen were the first in the county to volunteer george criddle enlisted from manti san pete co and herman whitey was already in the military service of the country then latter as replacement soldiers was angus heiner charley heiner and roy tribe then of morgan co but through no fault of theirs they did not get into foreign action they did not get overseas reinhardt olsen and D M anderson belonged to battery B utah light artillery they got to see service and plenty of service as this country was short of artillery over on the islands so no engagement ga of importance was made but some of the utah boys were there from the time of the tight fight before the fort of manila until the city was taken august 1893 1393 then after the insurrection broke out the utahna were given tour four more guns and the boys saw plenty of action they were in some scraps where their canons were tilled filled with dents made by the guns but the americans suffered very few losses there was no hospital service to speak of our medical service in the philippines was next to nothing anyone who will look up the records will find this to be true continued on last page |
