| Show WARS ON BANK ROBBERS national bankers association pressing active steps to protect members losses cut imprisonment or death of many desperate bank criminals the past year has brought no appreciable reduction in attacks on banks james E baum in charge 0 of the american bankers association protective department has reported to his organization in the six months ended february 28 1935 he says banks were targets for or daylight holdups and 40 night burglaries gl aries he added that although banks that are not members number only about halt half those enrolled in the association cia tion they suffered a tar far greater rate ot of attack namely 61 51 per cent of 0 all the bank robberies committed during the period losses show decrease during the period under report bank burglars and bandits exacted tribute amounting to compared with losses totaling a year ago ho he said this reduction in losses Is attributed to the time locking restrictions and other limitations in the exposure ot of surplus cash imposed last year vear by underwriters and several bank supervisory authorities the sharp reduction in the material loss of 0 money and securities resulting front bank robbery this year was overshadowed by the killing of 2 bank employees plo one bystander and 5 arresting officers and since last august bank robbery also cost the lives of 15 criminals and caused physical injuries to 10 hank bank employees 12 bystanders 9 arresting officers and 8 bandits a total of 0 ga casualties investigations by the associations agents resulted la in the arrest ot of 36 forgers 42 bandits and one burglar or a 79 of the bank criminals reported aa a mug ing apprehended luring the period |
