Show militarizing MILITAR IZING government it is a sad but true commentary on human nature that history has been one long seesaw struggle between freedom and oppression there are no indications yet of a change in the pattern individual freedom must still be fought for and constantly guarded by those i ho possess it both from interior and exterior enemies and as has often been pointed out attacks on freedom from within are actually more ol 01 a threat than attacks from without the country is solidly united against the latter it is not against the former domestic measures and legislation are continually proposed which would undermine nr restrict freedom an alert minority of public spirited citizens is our principal bulwark against enactment of these routine day to day threats one of the latest moves toward unnecessary arbitrary control is a proposal to militarize the civil aeronautics administration this would mean that the airways and eventually all civil aviation including alie airlines would become subject to the dictates of the military at present they are controlled as they should be by an impartial civilian government regulatory body whose rules apply equally to all the new proposal would place in the hands of one of the users of the domestic airways complete control over them and the service rendered an interested party is not likely to administer affairs in an unbiased manner it is for this perfectly obvious reason that normal control of the airways has been lodged in a service which has no direct personal interest except providing good service and equitable treatment of all users in a theatre of military operations military control and even arbitrary decisions are necessary for obvious reasons so far as can be seen no reason for such control exists or will exist in the united states in alie near future of government must be avoided for that reason alone if for no other a civilian agency such as the civil aeronautics administration should remain free of military control |
