george A robinson If of morgan army supply department now adv in france follows ky by JOHN HALL INVASION BASE TOWN TUESDAY before I 1 tell the story of this springboard town which was the first to lo 10 know that D day had dawned I 1 have lave a message for fathers mothers wives and sweethearts all over britain the empire and america your boys now over there have been living with us this past week living in a closed area completely cut off from you and for a week you ou have been wondering and wondering SPENT NIGHTS IN HOMES this Is the message I 1 want to pass on to you your boys have spent this last week in something very near to their own family life some of them were in our homes two nights ago singing sin gi ng hymns round the piano chatting or perhaps playing cards even though it was sunday they were happy very fit and in great spirits they went off determined to fight hard and get back to you quickly they went of thinking of you nearly all of them had snapshots of you in their tunic pockets some of us have little privileges to perform many of your sons solis left us your address and asked us shyly if we would mind dropping you a line just in case we shall never forget soon you will hear from us we had known since 4 a m that was D day since 4 a in the ground had been trembling to the roar of aircraft and heavy carriers gliders bombers and fighters sped across the channel in the semidarkness of a full moon that filtered through low clouds we could catch glimpses of them dawn brought a new note the burr burr of tiny observation planes all southbound out across the water STRANGE ACCENTS soon after dawn there were periods of silence soundless gaps in D day that none of us will ever forget not a shot not a bomb not a siren not even the rumble of a tank As daylight broadened everyday life restarted just as if this was any other day and now I 1 can tell for the first time some of the things which have been happening here starting more than 12 months ago when this area was marked off as the main springboard events moved quickly in the last few days every night and all night the roads rang with the sound of tanks guns and men slowly moving toward the C coast we could h hear c or them all the time but when daylight came it was difficult to find them T tanks Inks guns and wagons were hidden in woodlands and under roadside hedges men crowded out of sight into hotels cate houses a and nd even shops they slept on floors and even on counters local civilian defense workers went through special training courses N F S and other defense workers with strange accents arrived from different parts of the country A warning evacuation flashed to a bout about general civilian residents find and a general search began for temporary homes furth further e r ba back ck from th the e coast L more things began to happen a few days ago whole towns were closed As if they sensed D day those 36 hour leaves became more precious to the troops some would travel as far as scotland in those short breaks street telephone kiosks were sealed a row few days ago all troops had their letters censored hospitals were at the ready doctors and staffs were warned to maintain continuous stand to generals began tp appear eisenhower and monty among them the air assault over there gained strength at one time the war leaders considered closing this town entirely and evacuating every chiv civilian an man woman and child that was after it had been selected as one of the chief marshalling areas area s on second thought we were allowed to remain tonight we know that we di did d not betray that trust |
