Show STATE SCHOOL COSTS SLIGHT CUT dr C N jensen jen sen state superintend ten dent of public instruction in his annual report just made public shows the operating expenses ol of the school districts of utah totaled during the past year this year the districts propose according to their budgets to spend the reduction for the state amounting to or 4 percent p put in another way tor for each 10 that the district spent during the past year they propose to spend this year seventeen school districts propose to cut under the amounts spent last year roughly speaking the schools spend one half of the property taxes collected in the state IL if tor for purposes of illustration a 20 per cent reduction Is to be made in the general property tax as is demanded in some sections of the state then either the schools must share in the reduction or it if that Is impossible then the other agencies supported by the general property Y tax must take a 40 per cent reduction or the attempt at a 20 per cent reduction falls fails for the current curre ait year deax the number of teachers contemplated in the budget is or less than last year the number for elementary schools has been reduced to 2658 less than last year the number in junior high schools Is one less than last year and in senior high schools one more than last year the state as asa a whole has absorbed the increase found necessary in the salt lake city dusch esne for example cut its senior high school teaching staff from 38 to 34 and increased its junior high school teachers tear hers from 3 to 5 the number of supervisors in all districts in elementary and junior high schools has been reduced from 48 last year to 45 proposed for this year A few districts are proposing to 4 reduce the length of the school year the maximum nu number in the state 40 is maintained only in salt lake city and park city wayne last las year had 24 weeks in the lower grades grade s and 30 to in the high school emory Is the only other district to get along with as few as 28 weeks of school although kane used the same number last year in the elementary grades the large item in school operating costs Is that for instruction this includes chiefly the salaries of the teachers the amount budgeted last year ear was and the disbursements were A tendency to attempt to maintain the sal salaries arles while reducing the number of teachers tAza chers Is shown in the fact that the budgets tor for this year for instruction costs aggregated almost exact ly what was spent last year thirty school districts were able to live within their instruction budgets last year for this amount and showed surpluses at the end of the year of nine permitted such expenditures to tun run over the estimates by an aggregate amount of 40 one amount by which the budget for 1930 31 instruction st costs exceeded the disbursements bur was 43 jordan had 37 and murray and carbon 36 weeks of school last year this year they report their plans aa s indefinite apparently planning to hold school for only such period is as finances will permit cache school district proposes to reduce the year from 35 to 34 14 weeks millard from 33 to 32 nebo from 35 to 34 for some and 35 for others gintic tintic from 38 to 38 30 south summit from 35 to 34 and wasatch from 36 to 34 dently it is noted that 30 districts in the last la st school year kept their general control disbursements under the amount actually budgeted which was the business like way to do nine exceeded the budget one remained exactly on the line the total number of teaching positions in service last year and tha number proposed tor for the current school year in this and kotae of the nearby count counties iea are shown in the following counties 30 31 31 32 morgan 27 27 north summit 35 35 park city 28 25 south summit 30 27 duchesne 76 70 jordon log wasatch 51 44 salt lake city 1013 ogden |
