Show the i ne mormon migration released through courtesy of the utah historical landmarks asso association c bation newhouse building salt lake city utah moving west was nothing now new to the who first established themselves near palmyra new york then at kirkland ohio next in jackson county count M missouri iss 01 irly 1 tor for a few years in nauvoo illinois and then than temporarily at florence nebraska due to their plan of colonization and settlement it was necessary to have a line of communication from the east to the west wast and they did not therefore entirely sever connections with any place they ever aver occupied swithin within a a period of twenty years 1830 50 at it may be truly said that they covered the from the atlantic to the tha pacific maintaining an emigration establishment in new york a colonization project in pan bernardino california with mobile headquarters and many supply stations between eastern and western points A large part of 1840 1846 was consumed in traveling across southern iowa with stops tor for weeks or even months at mt and other places winter quarters on the present presena site of florence near omaha was vas established in ohe the winter of 1846 1847 animals equipment and supplies were ware purchased jonathan browning made new guns and repaired old ones everything was in readiness men three women two children and three colored servants with 73 wagons livestock and supplies set out for winter quarters bers under the leadership of brigham young on march 14 1847 young anticipated a later heavy morman migration the route along the north side of the south platte river was worn deep by thousands of wagons which passed over it prior to 1847 and the grass was grazed dose close by hundreds of thousands of animals the route selected therefore was along the north side of the north platte river where feed was more abundant and there wal less interference with their migration the right of way of the union pacific occupies the morman trail at intervals from omaha through fremont and in places as far west as the north platte from north platte the old route ran close to scotts bluff through old fort lar casper past independence rock and devils gate to split rock the sweetwater was closely followed as far as the present site of burnt ranch at burnt ranch the road turned sharply up the hill to the left over south pass pam through pacific springs farson along the I 1 big sandy through curah buttes to fort bridger from fort bridger the trail ran I 1 south of the present town of evanston and entered echo canyon just below its upper end A monument there indicates the junction of the old emigrant road with the lincoln highway the followed echo can yon to the present site alte of echo down weber canyon to henefer along browns creek through east canyon then over big mountain and little mountain into emigration canyon from fort bridger they followed in the tracks of hastings and the donners as far as the present town of He henefer from that point over a road made the year before by the donners from henefer to salt lake city when them the arrived in salt lake city miles goodyear was carrying on indifferent farming and some trading near ogden his rights were purchased for three thousand dollars and he moved on with his retinue of trappers traders and indians tod lans A mexican subject was living near Blutt Bluff rale south of salt lake city when the arrived in salt lake valley after the mexican gov eminent ceren utah this mans rights obtained under mexican grant were purchased by hunter and beckstead while there would be no difficulty in writing biographies of prominent men connected with the original morman migration of 1847 1347 brigham young Is historically the overshadowing character from the scholastic viewpoint however orson pratt was perhaps the most distinguished of the original pioneers he was born bom in washington county new york in 1811 and early in life identified himself with the latter latte r day saints he was a member of the tha first company of ten which left winter quarters in 1847 and narrated ted events along the road latitudes longitudes and altitudes were determined ter mined by him he possessed a brilliant mind and was intellectually active and made literary scientific and mathematical hema homa contributions after his arrival in utah also e edited a paper published in the interest of the church in liverpool and wrote a a series of pham on morman ism perhaps his most unique contri hued on page 4 |
