Show Mental Clinic Gives Procedures Procedure 1 The Mental Health Clinic team have submitted the following following following fol fol- fol- fol lowing information concerning the rehabilitative procedures being carried out in Sanpete County The first is the patron system and the second is group work with normal high school students The third is arranging for a full time full time coordinator coordinator coordinator co co- co- co of special services in the county PATRON SYSTEM A program program program pro pro- gram was instituted to utilize professional non-professional help in the rehabilitation of emotionally emotionally- disturbed children Various people in the community such as retired school teachers MIA workers senior high students etc were found They were selected on the basis of their own performance performance perform perform- ance ance Those picked were persons persons per per- sons who would not be a detriment detriment detriment det det- det- det to a child Senior high school students were picked on oa the basis of their academic performance which was high and pd also alQ on the basis of their own social adaptation adaptation- It was was' arranged for these patrons to spend one hour three times a week during during during dur dur- ing the month that the clinic team were gone usually right after school using as the basis basis of communication such things as school work sports social activities with friends or with family etc to build up a re re- re- re The primary focus was on the relationship and the secondary secondary secondary sec sec- focus was on academic help Part of the reason for finding these people instead of the patients patient's own family was because their own family famy fam Lam fly ily y were too emotionally involved involved involved in in- and usually were the cause of the pressure which resulted in the symptoms and so emotionally uninvolved peaple peo pea people people were sought to take the pressure off and yet to accomplish accomplish accomplish some ends usually academIc academic academic aca aca- demic or social This program worked very effectively when it was applied applied ap ap- plied diligently but it was difficult difficult difficult dif dif- to keep up consistent performance on the part of the patrons because of the length of time the clinic team were gone however at one onetime one onetime onetime time the program included as many as 40 patrons and children children chil chil- dren in the county with varying varying vary vary- ing results but usually results that were astonishing as to both parents and nd professional workers Some children went from falling failing grades to straight As in a month or two GROUP WORK IN THE HIGH SCHOOLS It was discovered discovered discovered dis dis- dis- dis covered that many of the people people people peo peo- referred from the high schools to the clinic came with some and some resentment resentment resentment re re- re- re as having been selected selected selected se se- out as nuts and sent to the psychiatrist to have their heads shrunk This kind of referring and this kind of approach on the part of the patient made it very difficult to accomplish the purpose A Anew Anew Anew new approach was adopted where it was advertised In the high sc school ool that group group th therapy would be available to all those who wished to volunteer This was was was' done with the hope that those who might be ordinarily selected out of the group would select themselves along with any others and that they would then be seen in a setting setting setting set set- ting of normal students and that help would be brought to many others as as well who might be needing it it but who would to refer themselves directly to fo the clinic This program has been very successful and as many as three groups have been teen seen These groups are are- self self selected selected and tend to go to work on their problems requiring very little direction and very little to guiding and seem able ables constructively share with each other and probe into themselves themselves themselves them them- selves and determine their impact im impact fin im- pact on other other- people and in general integrate themselves better better into a group and into the school i ARRANGING FOR A FULL TIME COORDINATOR OF j SPECIAL L SERVICES IN THE COUNTY Arrangements have nave been made with the state and school boards to pay a good i salary to a qualified person person- preferably in the area of psychology psychology psychology or social work to live full time in the county and work with the schools and the a county as well as with the I clinic team to coordinate effo efforts efforts ef ef- ef- ef fo forts when the group is here and supplement them wh 6 they are gone |
