There was a sense of unreality un- un V J Z reality during our ten-day ten trip k as I watched the plan of ourt our t tour unfold and a year old dream come true Twenty-seven Twenty of us rode In a bus along a beautiful tree- tree lined winding road from Dulles Airport Bly Ely Beal ZelIa Christensen Chris Chris- Alice Eva Thompson Glen J J. J and Virginia HL Nielson of Ephraim and ana Orpha Carlson of ManU Mantl were the local participants In this Journey A river boat ride to Mt Vernon was the beginning of an eastern tour of historical L religious and scenic significance cance and where very little was missed except sleep The groups group's next stop wasat wasat was wasat at Mount Vernon the abode of George and Martha Washington They saw the carriage house and other outbuildings as well as viewing the Potomac from the veranda of the Mansion They visited the tomb where the first President of this na nation nation nation na- na tion lies at rest On the return trip to Washington Washington WashIngton Wash Wash- ington they toured Alexandria Virginia and other areas of historical historical his his- Interest They were Im Impressed Impressed impressed Im- Im pressed with the old buildings and cemeteries which were well preserved They next stopped at Arlington Arling Arling- ton National Cemetery where they viewed the rows upon rows of white tomb stones marking the burial spot of soldiers soldiers soldiers sol sol- diers who have served In the wars They were present atthe at atthe atthe the ceremony cere mony of the changing of the guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier This was done L C with great precision The me m Sanpete sanpete san san- au- au pete visitors were also very Impressed with the Iwo Jima statue They also attended a shell concert on the Potomac which was presented by the US U.S. Marine Marine Marine Ma Ma- rine Band They reported that one of the unforgettable sites of the Washington WashIngton Wash Wash- ington area is the Lincoln Memorial Memorial Memorial Me Me- morial at night This nine nine- story building houses the marble marble marble mar mar- ble statue of Americas America's President All visitors sensed the sacred feeling of the build build- ing Everyone both black and white spoke in whispers As they approached the WhiteHouse White WhiteHouse te House they noticed the five block long line Une of tourists waitIng waiting waiting wait wait- ing to tour the famous home of the US U.S. Presidents The group then changed their plans and headed for the Gallery of Art This collection of art and sculpturing is world fa fa- fa There Is also a number of photographs of famous per per- sons The Sanpete tourists agreed with the slogan of the Rational national Gallery of Art which calls It the proudest jewel in WashIngton's Washington's Washington's Wash Wash- ington's crown The collection contains original paintings and sculpturing by the greatest artists artIsts artists art art- who have lived 11 ved En route to New York they stopped at Independence Square In Philadelphia Its cobblestone walks were a pleasant setting for the numerous buildings in that historical spot Their visit to N New w York started started started start start- ed of off with a visit to the E Empire Empire Em Em- m- m pire State Building where they the had a birds bird's eye view from the top of the story structure It was raining while they were there They were busy while in the nations nation's largest city They took tooka a bus tour of upper and lower New York They next boarded a boat for a trip around M Manhattan Manhattan Man Man- an- an hattan Island and then a stop at Staten Island On their voyage voyage voyage voy voy- age to Staten Island Islan 1 they passed the Statue of Liberty They attended the Broadway show Fiddler on the Roof A tour to the United N Nations Building was taken with a young Israeli girl as their guide At Atthe Atthe Atthe the Rockefeller Center they were entertained by the precision preci- preci sion slon dancing group The Rock- Rock ettes eUes a violinist a mixed chorus chor chor- us a ballet a butterfly dance featuring lights and mirrors and a movie They returned to their hotel via the subway The Lincoln Center buildings including the new Metropolitan Opera House and a plaza containing containing containing con con- an Old Faithful fountain fountain foun foun- tain were enjoyed as much as Oklahoma Oklahoma Okla Oklahoma the musical comedy homa that they saw there The Sanpete residents then headed toward Rochester NewYork New NewYork NewYork York and their date with the pageant at Hill Cumorah A tour was taken of the Eastman Eastman Eastman East East- man Kodak Co white while In Roch Roch- ester Both nights that the group attended the Pageant they witnessed witnessed witnessed wit wit- the miracle of the rain One non-Mormon non said These Mormons really make It H hard not to believe They also visited the Joseph Smith and Martin Harris homes the Hill HUI Cumorah the Sacred Grove and Palmyra The last lap of the tour was into Canada to see Falls They report that the falls contain contain contain con con- tain more water than ever be because because because be- be cause of the American Falls diversion They flew to Salt SaIl Lake from Buffalo New York |
