A Patte Patterson son HE AMERICAN PEOPLE have THE thoroughly demonstrated their appreciation of and belief in the abilities of General of the Army Douglas MacArthur By their tremendous tremendous tremendous tre tre- tre- tre demonstrations they have expressed their love and gratitude for or the services he has render rendered d their nation Unofficially that includes in- in includes includes in in- the senators and representatives tives in congress They too rendered rendered ren ren- dered their unqualified homage to toa a great man and their belief in his lis announced policies when the general addressed their joint ses ses- sion Now sion-Now Now there remains the official official official cial congressional verdict Will that verdict If U and when it is rendered support the President and his unpopular secretaries of state and defense or r will It support the Judgement of the theman theman theman man in whom the people have so enthusiastically expressed their confidence and appreciation tion At the time this is written I 1 need only one guess as to what the result will be There will be no definite verdict Congress will constitute a hung jury regardless of the wishes of the people Congress as such is isa isa isa a partisan political organization A bare majority in both houses senate and house represents the party of the President and the decidedly decidedly decidedly de de- de- de unpopular secretaries of state and defense whom the President President President Pres Pres- ident appointed and whom he be refused refused refused re re- re- re fused to fire That bare majority of the Presidents President's Presidents President's Presidents President's Pres Pres- ident's party controlling both senate and ho house se cannot afford to repudiate the leader of their party nor will they censure or vote a alack alack alack lack of confidence in the members of his cabinet whom the people have so definitely tely denounced When it is all over and Congress has had its official say we will be right where it all started Except Douglas MacArthur will know as definitely as wild enthusiasm across the nation can express the attitude of the people of the nation just where he stands in the hearts of the American people No action or lack of action on the part of congress can take that away from him The President may if he wishes accept such a stalemate as a victory for his policies and those of his secretaries of state and defense rather than as a vote of partisan political expediency Such Such Is the way of partisan politics politics poli poll tics in our United States Such is the way of our republic of the people people people peo peo- who wh are in control of the government government government gov gov- at all times The only way we can express our displeasure with a President once he Is elected is to impeach him if it he does something something something some some- thing that goes beyond his constitutional constitutional authority The people did not question the authority of the President to fire Gen MacArthur but they questioned questioned questioned ques ques- his method of doing it The extent of such disapproval was evidenced evidenced evidenced evi evi- in a radio poll conducted by Fulton Lewis Jr in which he T asked 16 questions with the answers answers answers an an- to be mailed to senators and representatives from the states and districts representing those answering in congress The second question in that list was Would you today vote for Harry S.
