Show PROFESSOR REPORTS ON BRAIN FEVER HERE brain I 1 ever in horses brain fever of nor S nay become quite serious in certain parts of 0 altah during the fall and summer sev eral cases have occurred in various parts of millard county it Is dit dif to predict to what extent the disease is spread earlier exper bence in utah has show that in some counties it has spread until 10 per cent of the horse population has become affected fifty per cent of the affected horses may with good care and nursing make a recovery since the outbreak in utah in 34 government workers have developed a new vaccine which has been used in idaho and other states with ap parent ly good results it takes the vaccine from two to four weeks to work following vaccination but it cannot prevent the disease the out break usually hits about july 15 it if the vaccine were administered about two weeks to a month before the us ual time of outbreak it might be ef in preventing the disease vaccine given in the latter part of the epidemic Is only money wasted the price of the vaccine plus the veterinary tees fees has been established in some communities at 4 50 per horse two injections it if immediate protection Is desired by the addition al use of serum then the complete lob job will cost in the neighborhood of 6 50 these prices will of course vary the exact method by which the dis ease Is spread baffles scientists it does not appear to be spread entirely by contact there is much evidence that biting insects may transmit the disease from one horse to another experiments show that two different species of mosquitoes may transmit the disease from affected to healthy guinea pigs and certain ticks may also te be carriers of the disease it is generally recommended to quarantine sick animals though it Is not believed that quarantine will do much to stop the spread of the disease because in in some un explain able manner the disease seems to travel over relatively large areas time alone can give out these hid den secrets in connection with dis nation of this serious malady the disease always subsides soon at af ter the first killing frost |
