photostat copy of the original map drawn by fath er escalante eliminating much ot of VIC detail he had on oia his n ap sum suen fig ranges hills a considerable quantity of notes in spanish placed in the margins and elsewhere and names of rivers that Is the is give a in essentials such as the ordinary non don technical reader of a per would want the expert would of course want every detail and hours would be spent in of 0 no interest to those not making a scholarly study of his trip step bi b step the photostat copy was sent in by mr air chas kelly author and writ er and explorer of the west and in te rested in the west but few know of 0 the existence of the map broadly speaking escalante lett left santa fe new mexico about fade lude pen dence day 1776 passed up in i t northwesterly cours crossing the los animas river which he said had indications of having once supported a sizeable population and would so again lie ile skirted close to the do lores river very close to the utah colorado line about due east ot of the la sal mountains which he show on his big map as BIG mountains at latitude 39 accurately placed he ile then crossed the dolores went into colorado and where it is mark ed butas notes the presence of a group of that branch of indians the and another a trifle north these were oft off in colorado visiting an test fest or a gab it if you like bartering and trading two ot of them agreed to go with him to their home land and acted as guides they conducted Es calante to a crossing of the green river near jensen the marker I 1 have seen then along the strawberry down to what we now call the cas tilla hot springs bathing resort on his map as agua ballente Cal lente hot wa ter over nearly to utah lake and then an invitation was given him to go up to about prove provo lie ile talked with the indians promised them that bis his people would return and teach them better living conditions and give them the gospel he then went south with one of the coriner guides and a younger indian passed over the sevier near mills I 1 wont split hairs with any critic up scipio val ley over helpio pass and down near fillmore when he then tor for some rea son retraced his steps and took a course which led him possibly over the north end of mud lake where A II of the party got stuck in the iu tr lud d westward about to deseret whether he crossed the sevier or u do not know though the dots of 0 his route would so indicate you rate will note he made a big loop there and passed south between clear lake and Pa livant butte showing it as prominent isolated and just what it Is a mountain being a landmark to al a following his course let us now digress note that he shows green river as emptying into thet the t sevier he ile evidently encounter ed it when it was running high and thought that such a volume of water could be accounted for only in that way and maybe his indian guides erroneously told him so it was at one time a big river for these parts as the indian name tor for it when translated Is big quiet river note too that he shows the sevier lake and the body of clear lake as merging into one body of 0 water I 1 know of no such evidence but will say there were innumerable lakes all about much water in faaet pah vant plenty water and what the actual water showed mirages added nor more and so he put them down on an hit his in na as sevier lau atleta in th huh tt tb tn ath alioth tl 0 wb tribal pal men in his party he ile nimes the big I 1 hat lat or pah vant valley valle because of its saltiness gives us clearly to understand that he met up with mud lake and that it was then as now a bog hole tor for the unwary and he marks tor for all future travelers the lo 10 cation of 0 butte consider ed as ag the FIRST map ever made of millard county and it is surprising ly accurate anyone of a practical nature could know exactly he was on the path closely enough tor for all pur poses of following of the first white man ever in millard county that we I 1 now of compared with other little known regions escalante a map Is service able even enen today and by it one could cover the territory nearly in his foot steps he shows great salt lake utah lake and the main chain of all the rivers encounter el with one major error it will be remembered that for long after escalante it was thought great salt lake emptied in to the pacific and he even shows such an outlet 0 ir digression is now over Us Es calante then followed up beaver deaver creek stopping it is said at walter J james jimes imes spring near his house and on out of the county we are now into and out of mil lard county in 1776 one hundred and ind sixty years ago anyone could negotiate the same route so accurate is it he puts delta at 39 latitude 39 SO go is correct and water cour ses are shown with great practical accuracy in addition to this map there is of course his daily notes in an orderly diary with latitude and longitude noted about every three to four days keeping one at all times to a rigid exactitude As this article is limited to mil lard county we will only hurriedly glance at the rest of his journey from about milford down to west of cedar city then back over the famous mountain meadows or very close then back eastwardly where he wandered for some time trying to find a crossing indians scared of the party and unwilling to guide them his final passage over the big river at the crossing of the fathers and navaho peak shown plainly fairly near to his east then oraibi on the hill zuni with the catholic church shown prominently then onward to acoma which he shows as a catholic church on a hill anyone interested comein cornein and see the photo taken from an airplane showing the church on top of the wind swept rock of achma the whole town in an almost location the little girl climb ing up the ladder in IR the floto photo in my office was mas taken at acoma and sev pral eral other views of the town all of which have been put on lantern slid es for showing I 1 also have a photo of the roman catholic church at zuni a church over years old neglected run down root roof gone hand carved tim bers hers 12 to 14 inches square hauled by the indians under the direction of the padres from the forest manyan aa es away I 1 have never visited the group croup ot of towns at though I 1 have many pictures and books digging up this old map from ma MR adrid was quite an achievement I 1 ex I 1 ress my thanks to mr kelly tor for the 1 privilege lege of seeing it I 1 did not know s tb ch a thing was in existence and I 1 was not alone in it either thus we hae haie a diary and a map SO 80 years before the pioneers set toot foot in utah and that highly accurate ot of our own county the diary states that escalante Ea calante met some bearded in dhans somewhere about this vicinity betwee delta and fillmore Filka ore major powell pla pictures tarel ot of them 11 I 1 have a copy ot of one of his pictures I 1 have followed escalante s trail with his diary in hand and checked it with our maps from scipio in our county out to mountain meadows and never feeling that at any time was I 1 as much as five miles from hia his actual route it is all very interest ing and la Is part of the history ot of billiard millard count county all young persona persons as well ut at ir elders should knoy know frank nock NIth |
