Show FIRST postoffice POST OFFICE IN DELTA J henry J mccullough first postmaster henry J mccullough and family were among the first settlers of del ta then known as melville the family moved here from the logs tor for the house were hauled from Fill moret in november of 1907 and the house was completed in december of that year when vie family moved here october 29 1907 mr mccullough was appointed postmaster and the name of the town was changed from melville to burtner wm win J colder golder edwin bartholomew bartholemew of fillmore and peter brunson of burtner were his bondsmen on jan 18 1908 the post office was opened however that morning the he train did not stop on feb ath toe the first post cards and stamps were received to hold the post office it was required that 10 worth of poat post age stamps must be cancelled a day and sometimes the lack of letters was made up by his daughter there was no sate safe so the first stamps etc were kept in a trunk that was uncle sam sams s vault on aeb 28 1908 shelves were put in and a small stock of goods were hauled by kiss nellie mccullough from rom oasis and on march ath del ta s first department store was op ened the regulations said that the rail way would deliver the mall mail provided the post postoffice office tice was within a certain number of feet this building was just a trifle farther away than that and it was necessary to move it 58 feet f nearer while the mall mail was be ing can cabled led levi mccullough waa was the first mall mail carrier succeeded by nels els bishop dishop this moving job was completed oct 1909 henry J mccullough acted as the postmaster until his death in dec dee 1911 brhen his son completed the quarter after which J avery dish bish op was appointed next J A faust dark clark allred and the present incumbent 0 P fitzgerald tom watson who carefully read the dally daily journal of mr mccullough sas that there were only two wella wells in town at the very early times and that today you can tell any resident er of 1907 by the tact fact that ails or her arms are stretched eight inches longer than normal lugging water from either one of the two wells so tar far were they away from the scattered houses |
