Show THE LIVESTOCK SITUATION by J A mcnaughton the tact fact that the untied united states last year went through what was probably the most serious drouth condition in all history Is being brot home to the consumer all sorts of stories are being broadcast in re to the shortage ot of meat and the resultant higher prices than pre up to january first but the fact of thi matter Is that the 1934 drouth Is mainly responsible for the meat shortage and it was only thru desperate methods that the stock men of the largest producing states were able to save a portion of their flocks and herds the result Is that from the ruin bously low prices of the past three years livestock prices have made rapid advances and are now gener ally back to the 1931 levels but still far below the peak prices of 28 and 29 those livestock producers who are fortunate enough to have something to sell are getting good prices and in a measure are ering a portion of the losses they suf when prices were extremely low americans must arrange their budgets to provide for high prices of meat tor for the next year or two news from the great producing sec see eions of the middle west is not en cou raging the terrific dust storms during the past two weeks are tak ing oft off the top soil of some of the ri ost productive land and when the ap soil Is gone normal production is lessened instead of being hur bur deed v ith surpluses we are in dan fer ger of being forced to conserve what we have hav on hand and make the re maini ig land produce better and lar ger crops than heretofore supply and demand will continue to establish prices the livestock producer will sell tor for the highest he tan can get and the consumer will buy as cheaply in turn as he can un der that system prices will never go I 1 igler than the public is able and willing to pay tor for what meat I 1 is B avail able abl |
