Show DOLS ai V ply we copy tha the following from fro inthe the richfield Mch field reaper raper issue of septem ber 23 1933 an overwhelming majority of the citizens of richfield and surrounding communities were astounded and bitterly incensed ov over erthe the an no that appeared in the salt lake papers this week to the effect that the state board of par dons had granted a parole parol e to alfred J bird to become effective feb 1 1934 bird was formerly tor merly assistant cash ler ter of the state bank of sevier here and was sentenced by judge N J bates nearly two years ago to berve from one to ten years at hard labor in the state penitentiary on a charge of embezzling funds from the bank in which he was a trusted employee we believe we speak the general sentiment of this tills community when desay we say that alfred bird has not done sufficient cent for his crime nor could he atone tor for the rank in justice he did to his trusting friends and neighbors even it if he remained behind the bars tor for the rest of his life certainly a scant two years Is not enough time to be imprisoned tor for the crime of stealing from to over a period ot of eight years by his own admission even it if the question of 0 punish ment were not being considered it Is a poor example to set for the young people when we allow a man to get away with a crime like that and then merely rest up as bird defined his incarceration recently for a couple of years what jussif Is there for the truth of the oft repeated slogan crime does not pay if a person was lacking at all in the matter of conscience what Is to prevent him from stealing some 50 knowing that he will be imprisoned tor for only a year or so and then can come out and enjoy his stolen fruits bird and his family lived in fine style tor for eight years while this contemptible wretch was robbing widows orphans struggling farmers and everyone else of their mite and posing as a sanctified brother in the church there is no limit to the extent of the crime which he committed against society here savings of a lifetime have been wiped out busl bust ness has been depressed lives have been saddened and even deaths at tributes tri buted more or less directly to the falli failure lre of the state bank of sevier and this failure would not have oc burred according to the state bank examiner it if it had not been tor for bird s embezzlement Is a short two year bear prison term sufficient punishment tor for a man like thata bird has been a sort of silk stocking prisoner we demanding and expecting to be treated in a manner befitting hia his misconception of his place in life no doubt as has been said they would be very glad to get rid of him up there however we don t want him down here at least until be he has paid the full penalty for his crime so far as the law stipulates anyway let s see justice done and the proper example made of this man sot so that other people will not be tempt ed to do likewise with the expects tion of a very lenient punishment we really did not feel the depression down here until this bank failed then things started to tumble and have not returned to normalcy yet we seriously doubt it if our other bank would have failed if it it h id ld not been for the nervousness resulting from the collapse of the state bank of sevier which alfred bird drag ged down let us get busy and use our influence with the board of pardons to see that this man Is not again turned loose upon society at least until he has been made to real ize the full significance of what he has done certainly he has not reached that stage yet yett richfield reaper sep 21 1933 so highly did the salt lake trib une regard this article from the richfield reaper it was used intact in the tribune of monday the under the heading the public pulse |
