the change of Jil li mals five unbroken mexican mules were used to make this trip over a poor road part ot of which was vas only a rough trail mall mail trips were presumed to be made once a month in the 50 s but at times the service was very arreg landl ular in 1864 1854 mcgraw at f Maxy maryland made a contract to carry the trans mall mail tor for 13 a year mcgraw and the was tak en up by kimball and camany a mormon firm which carried the mail during 1856 and part of 1857 dur in the winter of 1857 it required seventy eight days of hard travel in breaking bie aking trail and severe suffering to carry the mall mail from salt lake to independence john M hockaday had the next contract let in 1853 to carry mail between the missouri arver and utah in the meantime carriers had learn ed something about the cost of su h operations and hockaday was paid at the rate of a year t f r aich he was required to transi t mail f aiom i orn the missouri river to I 1 I 1 ill h once a week it cost the united states goverts ment a year to carry the mall mail from st joseph missouri to sacramento cal a little later the receipt for this service amounted to only about 55 on tie tle routes organize organized in 1861 i concord stages were used 1 on an average miles a day were made on the route from st joseph mo thru salt lake city to placerville erville cal dally daily operations continued for several years except when Int erupted by indians in 1862 64 65 this was the greatest stage line the world has ever known mall mail passengers and express were carried and eating sta eions were maintained meals in the eating stations ragged in price fr from 0 fifty centes to two dollars each passengers slept in the coaches traveled throughout the night ben Holl holliday idly was the central tig fig ure of the overland mail and stage route in addition to this line he f also purchased the Dutter butterfield field stage route which was run in connection with the original one holliday was not only a dominant figure but also spectacular in the 60 a he lie decided to travel by special stage coach from his western pacific coast terrains to atchison Atch lson hansma Iv ansas a distance of some 2 miles piles he lie made that dis distance in twelve days and two hours beating the regular mail schedule five days the trip cost halliday 20 and wear and tear on stock and vehicles and other expenses jn n making the journey this was inas the fastest trip ever made anywhere by a concord stage and never excelled by any oth er horse travel except that of the pony express the
