legendary hunting bunting etc there was difficulty in determining which was most to be admired his piquant quaint picturesque style of presentation or the singularly ar aboriginal drawings joes joe s illustrations of the secluded mountain glen with the female cou con gar and kittens in repose Is haunt ing in its striking realism the lion ess is absolutely perfect in outline and in pose a composite of rest falness and contentment yet with head erect and limbs prepared tor for a deadly spring in the event of an at tack on herself or kittens the draw Is so true to life as to be startling in its evidence of rare genius in an untutored man had joe a s gift tor for descriptive writing and skill in tree free hand sketching been cultivated in early life and followed up with technical training he would have re calved national recognition as a writer and illustrator of indian life lite I 1 knew and loved his kinsman nimrod the hunter and I 1 hope that some day I 1 may meet joseph J pik himself without the use of shading lines iines the eye la Is told that the animals are on a flat ledge with a sharp bluff back of them and to the right and across the canyon tilled filled with trees is the table mountain in the rear then the pose of the creatures see the left hind fot tot of the lioness so turned up as to show the ball of the toot foot well done and skillfully executed simplicity the text books say Is the charm of art thou not paint but one picture on an one canvas one thing simply told with the fewest number of lines possibly Is the rule of art joe has but one picture simply told no super superfluous loua flous lines and yet every thing told that can be conveyed in the setting |
